The GMAT test is administered by GMAC. It is used to determine whether applicants are ready for academic work that is for a graduate level. It measures skills across three sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. Graduate schools will look at an applicant’s GMAT
score to figure out whether that individual is ready for the difficulty of MBA programs. Those who have moderately good or high scores will likely be accepted. But the GMAT score is not the only thing that is looked at but also academic records or work experience.

What does the GMAT consist of?
Since January 2024, the GMAT Focus Edition has fully replaced the older 4-section GMAT. The Analytical Writing Assessment (essay) was removed entirely, and the exam now has just 3 sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. Test takers can choose the order of the three sections at the start of the exam. Try our LNAT practice test.
The Quantitative Reasoning section contains only problem-solving questions (the older data-sufficiency question type in this section was moved into Data Insights). Calculators are not allowed; scratch work is done on a laminated graph pad provided at the test center.
The Verbal Reasoning section now contains only reading comprehension and critical reasoning questions — sentence correction was removed in the Focus Edition.
The Data Insights section combines five question formats: data sufficiency, graphics interpretation, two-part analysis, table analysis, and multi-source reasoning. It measures how well you can evaluate information from graphs, tables, and multiple sources.
MBA no GMAT required?
MBA GMAT Requirement
For students seeking work at organizations that do not hire based on GMAT scores, enrolling in an online MBA without GMAT requirement makes more sense.
Given that GMAT and GRE results have been used to evaluate applications for decades, the fact that so many schools have dropped testing in recent years may sound surprising.
While a high GMAT score indicates that you can learn how to pass an exam, it does not necessarily indicate how well you will perform in classes or whether you will be a successful company manager after graduation. It is unable to assess your interpersonal and networking capabilities, as well as a variety of other crucial business skills. As a result, it makes sense for MBA programs to take into account additional factors when evaluating applications.
- ✓Review the official GMAT exam content outline
- ✓Take a diagnostic practice test to identify weak areas
- ✓Create a study schedule (4-8 weeks recommended)
- ✓Focus on your weakest domains first
- ✓Complete at least 3 full-length practice exams
- ✓Review all incorrect answers with detailed explanations
- ✓Take a final practice test 1 week before exam day
Online MBA Programs Without GMAT Requirements
Enrolling in non-accredited programs might make receiving federal student aid, transferring credits, applying for license, and/or finding work difficult or impossible. Schools can be accredited by one of numerous regional organizations. These organizations evaluate schools and universities to ensure that they offer relevant courses, supportive services, and qualified professors. Make sure your chosen institution is accredited by checking the Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs maintained by the United States Department of Education.
There are many online MBA programs not requiring GMAT like University of Washington, Boston University, and North Carolina State University. The GMAT has been used by universities and colleges to examine and evaluate potential business school students since its introduction in 1954. A good GMAT score demonstrates that candidates are capable of acing an exam. It does not, however, predict how well they will perform in class or if they will be successful company managers after graduation. The placement test does not assess interpersonal skills, networking talents, or other critical business abilities. Because of these considerations, it makes sense for business schools that offer online MBAs to look at other variables when evaluating applications.
Online MBA no GMAT / Online Executive no GMAT : Applicants might profit from a GMAT exemption in a variety of ways. Most students will be able to avoid the burden of the arduous GMAT by applying to one of these elite business programs. These online MBA schools recognize and appreciate the fact that professionals are busy adults with numerous obligations, and they provide more practical choices. Many of these programs accept applications on a rolling basis and have several start dates throughout the year. Instead of only taking practice GMAT tests and prep classes, mini accelerated semesters allow you to start your degree in a couple of weeks and earn credits toward your MBA. Below are some of the best MBA programs online, no GMAT required:
- University of Massachusetts Lowell Robert J. Manning School of Business – Lowell, Massachusetts
- University of Wisconsin-Whitewater College of Business and Economics – Whitewater, Wisconsin
- Auburn University Raymond J. Harbert College of Business – Auburn, Alabama
- University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business – Lincoln, Nebraska
- Lehigh University College of Business and Economics – Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

What does the GMAT consist of?
Format and Content Outline
The GMAT Focus Edition consists of 3 sections, and you choose the order you take them in at the start of the exam.
| GMAT Section | Number of Questions | Time Allowed | Score Range |
| Quantitative Reasoning | 21 questions | 45 minutes | 60 to 90 |
| Verbal Reasoning | 23 questions | 45 minutes | 60 to 90 |
| Data Insights | 20 questions | 45 minutes | 60 to 90 |
Total testing time is 2 hours and 15 minutes for 64 questions, plus optional breaks.
The Quantitative Reasoning section uses a single question type — problem-solving — to test basic algebra and arithmetic skills.
The Verbal Reasoning section has two question types:
- Reading Comprehension - questions that test whether you can summarize and critically analyze a passage.
- Critical Reasoning - questions that involve understanding and evaluating arguments, logically analyzing evidence and conclusions.
The Data Insights section has five question types:
- Data Sufficiency - questions that determine whether the data given is sufficient to answer the question.
- Graphics Interpretation - questions that ask you to complete statements based on a graph or chart.
- Two-Part Analysis - questions where you select answers to two related sub-questions from a list of choices.
- Table Analysis - questions that provide a sortable table of data in a true/false or yes/no format.
- Multi-Source Reasoning - questions that give information across multiple tabs (text, charts, tables) that must be synthesized.
How is the GMAT test scored?
The GMAT Focus Edition is computer-adaptive: the difficulty of each question adjusts based on your prior answers. The total score ranges from 205 to 805, in 10-point increments, and is a combination of your three section scores (each scored 60 to 90). There is no separate essay or Integrated Reasoning score in the Focus Edition — those were retired when it replaced the older GMAT format in 2024.
Does the GMAT still have an essay (AWA)?
No. The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) essay section was removed when GMAC launched the GMAT Focus Edition. If you see references to an AWA score online, they refer to the retired, older version of the GMAT — the current exam has no essay and no separate AWA score.
Is Integrated Reasoning still a separate section?
Not anymore. The old Integrated Reasoning (IR) section was folded into the new Data Insights section when the GMAT Focus Edition launched. Data Insights is scored on the same 60-to-90 scale as the Quantitative and Verbal sections and does contribute to your total 205-805 score, unlike the old standalone IR score.
What is a good GMAT score?
You should always compare your score to the average scores admitted applicants report at your target schools — these vary by program and change over time, so check each school's published class profile for the most current figures rather than relying on a single site-wide average.
What are some tips to ace the GMAT?
- For Data Insights (the GMAT Focus Edition section that replaced Integrated Reasoning), remember two methods when answering this section. First, they must be able to analyze the information and second they must approach each question strategically. Since you will encounter visual information in this portion, you have to be able to get the gist of the information. Otherwise, you’ll be trying to answer the questions without all of the useful facts. In addition to that, you have to answer the questions strategically so you won’t waste time. You can use strategies such as estimation, elimination of incorrect choices, etc.
- For Quantitative, applicants should brush up on their basic math and plan how they can solve such questions quickly. You can make use of strategic guessings, such as the process of elimination to lessen the wrong answers.
- For Verbal, it is important for test-takers to pace themselves. This portion contains passages that should be read thoroughly and critically. So, it is crucial that you know how to time each question. You can also use paraphrasing so you can simplify complicated prose.
By learning all of these tips for each section, you can apply it by taking GMAT practice tests and GMAT preps. If you are a beginner, you have to accustom yourself with the test content and format.
You can try to answer these GMAT sample questions to know what to expect:

Verbal Section
The increase in taxes on cigarettes next month will not limit the use of addictive tobacco products to the extent that health advocates hope. - Cigars and chewing tobacco can satisfy the nicotine cravings of most cigarette smokers.
- The taste, smell, and texture of cigars and chewing tobacco are sufficiently different from those of cigarettes to deter cigarette smokers from using them.
- Many health advocates themselves use tobacco products.
- The government might also impose significant taxes on cigars and chewing tobacco over the course of two years.
- Cigars and chewing tobacco are often more expensive than cigarettes.
Quantitative Section

- 12
- 16

Argument: 'Online retailers that offer free returns have significantly higher customer retention rates than those that charge for returns. Our company should implement a free returns policy to improve retention.' To properly evaluate this recommendation, it would be most useful to know:
- A. Whether our current customers are aware that we charge for returns
- B. Whether free returns policies cause higher retention, or whether retailers with free returns differ in other ways that attract loyal customers
- C. The industry average return rate for our product category
- D. Whether our competitors currently offer free return policies
Answer: B. Whether free returns policies cause higher retention, or whether retailers with free returns differ in other ways that attract loyal customers
The argument assumes free returns cause higher retention. But retailers offering free returns may also invest more in quality, service, or selection — the free returns may be a marker of overall quality, not the cause of retention.

- B. 78.4
- C. 79.0
- D. 80.0

- B. The supplement is inexpensive
- C. The test was administered by a doctor
- D. Users took the supplement daily
Answer: A. Users and non-users were comparable in memory before taking it

- C. Sum the salaries only
- D. Check the alphabetically first employee
Answer: A. Sort by salary to find the top earner, then check that person's service years against the maximum
Identify the top earner, then verify their service equals the column maximum.
