CNA Jobs in Hawaii: Training, Salary, and Registry Guide 2026 June
π Find CNA jobs in Hawaii. Explore travel CNA Hawaii contracts, Oahu training programs, CNA salary data, and Hawaii CNA registry requirements.

Hawaii's healthcare industry doesn't look like the mainland. The islands run a unique mix of small rural clinics, military hospitals, and resort-area urgent care centers β all competing for the same pool of certified nursing assistants. If you're searching for cna jobs in hawaii, you'll find demand that's been climbing steadily since 2023 with no signs of slowing down.
Here's what makes Hawaii different. The state's aging population is growing faster than the national average, and many experienced CNAs leave for better-paying mainland positions. That creates openings β lots of them. Travel CNA hawaii assignments have exploded because facilities can't fill permanent roles fast enough. Staffing agencies now offer relocation packages that cover flights, housing stipends, and licensing fees just to get bodies on the ground.
The cost of living is real, though. Honolulu ranks among the most expensive cities in the U.S., and outer islands aren't much cheaper. A CNA paycheck that feels comfortable in Kansas won't stretch the same way in Kailua. You need to understand the actual numbers β what facilities pay, what housing costs, what travel contracts really include β before making any decisions.
This guide breaks down everything: registry requirements, training programs on Oahu, salary data across all islands, and the travel CNA market. Whether you're a local resident looking to start your career or a mainland CNA eyeing a Hawaii contract, you'll find the specifics that matter.
One thing worth knowing right away. Hawaii's CNA certification process runs through the state Department of Health, not a third-party testing company like many mainland states use. That means different paperwork, different timelines, and different renewal rules than what you might be used to.
The travel cna hawaii market has become one of the hottest in the country. Staffing agencies β companies like Aya Healthcare, CrossCountry, and Host Healthcare β post Hawaii assignments year-round because the islands consistently rank among the hardest states to staff. Contracts typically run 8 to 13 weeks, and the best ones include furnished housing or a housing stipend between $1,200 and $2,000 per month.
What separates a good travel contract from a bad one? The stipend structure. Tax-free stipends for housing and meals can push your effective hourly rate well above $25, even when the base wage looks modest on paper. But some agencies bury low base pay under flashy stipend numbers β so always calculate the total compensation package, not just the headline rate.
The hawaii cna registry is the first hurdle for any travel CNA. Hawaii requires reciprocity verification from your home state, plus a criminal background check that takes 4 to 6 weeks. Don't wait until you accept a contract to start this process. Smart travelers submit their registry application the moment they start browsing Hawaii assignments β that way, you're cleared to work on day one when the right contract appears.
Most travel assignments cluster around Oahu and Maui. The Big Island and Kauai have fewer facilities but less competition, which sometimes translates to better pay or more flexible schedules. Rural assignments on the Big Island occasionally offer the highest weekly rates because so few travelers want to live outside the tourist zones.

Finding cna classes oahu isn't hard β picking the right program is the challenge. Oahu has the highest concentration of training schools in the state, with options ranging from community colleges to private vocational schools to hospital-based programs that hire graduates directly. Travel cna jobs in hawaii often require at least six months of active experience, so local training plus a few months at a Hawaii facility is the fastest path into travel work.
Kapiolani Community College runs the most well-known program. Their CNA training takes about 6 weeks of full-time study and costs roughly $1,200 including materials and the state competency exam fee. Halau Kupukupu, a smaller private school in Honolulu, offers evening and weekend classes for people who can't quit their day job during training. Both programs maintain pass rates above 85% on the state skills exam.
Here's something people miss. Hospital-based programs β like the one at Queen's Medical Center β sometimes waive tuition entirely if you commit to working at their facility for 12 months after certification. That's a free education plus guaranteed employment in one of Hawaii's best hospitals. The catch: you're locked into their schedule and pay scale for that first year.
Cna programs oahu also include specialized tracks. Some schools offer geriatric-focused CNA training that qualifies you for higher-paying long-term care positions. Others include phlebotomy or EKG basics alongside the standard CNA curriculum, making you more competitive for hospital cna jobs CNAs handle expanded duties.
Hawaii CNA Training Options by Island
Oahu has the most CNA training options in Hawaii. Kapiolani Community College (6-week program, ~$1,200), Halau Kupukupu (evening/weekend), and Queen's Medical Center (tuition-free with 12-month commitment) are the top choices. Most programs include clinical rotations at local skilled nursing facilities. Oahu graduates benefit from immediate access to Honolulu's hospital network β the largest job market in the state.
Every working CNA in the state must appear on the cna registry hawaii list maintained by the Department of Health. No exceptions. If your name isn't on that registry, no facility β hospital, nursing home, or home health agency β can legally employ you. The cna hawaii certification process involves completing a state-approved training program, passing the written and skills competency exams, and submitting a background check.
Renewals happen every two years. You need at least 8 hours of paid CNA work within the renewal period plus 12 hours of continuing education. Miss the deadline and your certification lapses β reinstatement requires retaking the competency exams, which costs time and money you don't want to spend. Set a calendar reminder 90 days before expiration.
For out-of-state CNAs, Hawaii offers reciprocity but it's not automatic. You'll submit your current state certification, proof of training hours (minimum 100), and a federal background check through the FBI's fingerprint card system. Processing takes 4 to 6 weeks on average. Some applicants report waits of 8 weeks during peak season β January through March β when travel CNAs flood the system with applications.
The registry also tracks disciplinary actions. Any findings of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of patient property get permanently recorded. Facilities check the registry before every hire, and a single substantiated complaint can end your CNA career in Hawaii permanently. Keep your record clean. That's not negotiable.

Let's talk money. Cna jobs oahu pay more than the other islands, but not by as much as you'd think. The median hourly wage for CNAs on Oahu sits around $18.50 β roughly $38,500 annually for full-time work. Maui and the Big Island average $17.00 to $17.75. Kauai falls somewhere in between. These numbers come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and local job postings, not recruiter promises.
The cna salary hawaii picture changes dramatically when you factor in shift differentials. Night shifts add $2 to $3 per hour at most facilities. Weekend differentials push another $1.50 to $2.00 on top of that. A CNA working Friday and Saturday night shifts at a Honolulu nursing home can clear $23 to $24 per hour β nearly 30% above the base rate.
Hospital CNAs consistently out-earn their nursing home counterparts. Queen's Medical Center, Kapiolani Medical Center, and Tripler Army Medical Center (civilian positions) all pay in the $19 to $21 per hour range for experienced CNAs. Compare that to long-term care facilities, where $16 to $18 is standard even with a few years of experience. The trade-off: hospitals demand more flexibility with scheduling and often require certification in additional skills like phlebotomy or EKG monitoring.
Travel CNA contracts blow all of these numbers away. Weekly pay packages for Hawaii assignments typically range from $1,400 to $2,100, depending on the island, facility type, and season. Peak season β winter months when mainland snowbirds increase the patient census β pays the most. A 13-week winter contract on Maui can net you $25,000 or more after taxes and stipends.
Pros and Cons of CNA Work in Hawaii
- +Higher demand means easier job placement and more bargaining power
- +Travel CNA contracts offer premium pay with housing stipends included
- +Year-round warm climate makes commuting and outdoor breaks pleasant
- +Military hospitals provide federal benefits and job stability
- +Smaller facilities mean closer patient relationships and less bureaucracy
- +Multiple islands create diverse work environments within one state
- βCost of living erases much of the pay advantage over mainland states
- βHousing costs in Honolulu can consume 40-50% of a CNA salary
- βLimited advancement opportunities compared to larger mainland hospital systems
- βIsland isolation makes continuing education courses harder to access
- βRegistry reciprocity process takes 4-8 weeks for out-of-state CNAs
- βRural island positions may require on-call coverage with no backup staff
Cna programs oahu aren't the only way into Hawaii healthcare. Hawaii cna contracts through staffing agencies represent a massive and growing segment of the workforce. Facilities across all islands rely on contract CNAs to fill gaps during census spikes, staff vacations, and seasonal surges. These aren't emergency fill-ins β they're planned, budgeted positions that facilities build into their annual staffing models.
Contract lengths vary. Short-term crisis contracts run 4 to 6 weeks and pay the highest rates β sometimes $2,200 per week or more. Standard contracts span 8 to 13 weeks with moderate pay but better benefits and housing. Extended contracts of 26 weeks offer the lowest weekly rate but provide stability and sometimes include health insurance, PTO accrual, and completion bonuses worth $1,000 to $3,000.
The negotiation window is real. Unlike permanent positions where salary is mostly fixed, travel contracts have room to negotiate. Ask about housing stipend amounts, travel reimbursement, license fee coverage, and completion bonuses before signing. Agencies make money on the spread between what the facility pays and what they pay you β that spread is negotiable, especially during high-demand periods like December through March.
One trap to avoid: agencies that advertise "Hawaii CNA β $2,500/week" without specifying whether that includes the housing stipend or sits on top of it. Always get the breakdown in writing. Base hourly rate, overtime rate, housing stipend (taxable vs. non-taxable), meals and incidentals β every line item matters when you're calculating whether a contract actually makes financial sense against Hawaii's cost of living.

Hawaii CNA Job Application Checklist
- βVerify your certification appears on the Hawaii Nurse Aide Registry
- βComplete FBI fingerprint background check (allow 4-6 weeks)
- βGather proof of at least 100 hours of approved CNA training
- βObtain copies of your CPR/BLS certification (must be current)
- βRequest official transcripts from your training program
- βGet TB clearance test results (required by all Hawaii facilities)
- βPrepare two professional references from healthcare supervisors
- βResearch facility-specific orientation requirements on your target island
- βCalculate total cost of living for your chosen location before accepting offers
- βSet up direct deposit β most Hawaii facilities require it for payroll
Cna training oahu options keep expanding because facilities can't hire fast enough. In 2025 alone, three new training programs opened on Oahu β two private schools and one hospital-affiliated program at Pali Momi Medical Center. The growth reflects a simple reality: Hawaii needs more CNAs than the existing training pipeline produces, and schools are racing to fill that gap.
What does cna pay in hawaii actually look like after expenses? Let's do the math. A full-time CNA earning $18.50/hour grosses about $38,480 annually. After federal and state taxes (Hawaii has one of the highest state income tax rates in the country), you're looking at roughly $30,000 take-home. Median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Honolulu runs $1,800 to $2,200 per month. That's $21,600 to $26,400 per year on housing alone β leaving $3,600 to $8,400 for everything else.
Those numbers explain why so many Hawaii CNAs work overtime, pick up per diem shifts, or pursue travel contracts. A CNA pulling regular overtime at time-and-a-half can add $8,000 to $12,000 annually. Per diem shifts at staffing agencies pay $22 to $28 per hour with no benefits β but the flexibility lets you stack shifts during high-census weeks and take time off when things slow down.
The smartest financial play? Get certified on Oahu, work 6 to 12 months at a local facility to build experience, then transition to travel contracts. Your Hawaii certification, local references, and island-specific clinical experience make you extremely attractive to agencies. First-year travel CNAs with Hawaii experience routinely land contracts paying $1,600 to $1,900 per week β a massive jump from permanent staff pay.
Cna training hawaii programs across all islands share the same 100-hour minimum curriculum, but the clinical experience varies wildly depending on where you train. Oahu students rotate through busy urban hospitals where you'll see 30 patients per shift. Big Island students might work in a 20-bed rural facility where you handle everything from vitals to meal delivery. Both prepare you for the state exam β but they build very different skill sets.
Cna jobs honolulu represent about 60% of all CNA positions in the state. The concentration makes sense: Honolulu houses the largest hospitals, the most nursing homes, and the highest population density. Queen's Medical Center alone employs over 200 CNAs across its two campuses. Kapiolani Medical Center, Straub Medical Center, and Kaiser Permanente Moanalua each maintain CNA staffs of 50 to 100. And that's just the hospital sector β add in long-term care facilities, home health agencies, and hospice providers, and Honolulu becomes the obvious place to launch a CNA career.
But don't sleep on the neighbor islands. Maui's Hale Makua Health Services is one of the largest long-term care employers in the state and consistently hires new graduates. Kona Community Hospital on the Big Island has a reputation for excellent training and mentorship programs. And Wilcox Medical Center on Kauai offers some of the best work-life balance in Hawaii healthcare β smaller patient loads, less traffic, and a cost of living that's slightly more manageable than Honolulu.
The military connection matters too. Tripler Army Medical Center on Oahu hires civilian CNAs for many positions, and those jobs come with federal pay scales, benefits, and retirement options that blow private-sector compensation out of the water. If you're eligible for federal employment, Tripler should be at the top of your list.
Hawaii's FBI fingerprint background check takes 4 to 8 weeks during peak season (January-March). If you're planning a travel contract or new job start date, submit your fingerprints immediately β there's no way to expedite the process. Expired background checks must be completely redone.
Getting your cna certification hawaii squared away is step one, but the job search itself requires strategy. Don't just blast applications to every facility on the island. Research which employers offer the best orientation programs, which ones have the highest staff retention rates, and which ones are known for burning through new hires in six months. Glassdoor reviews and conversations with current CNAs give you the real picture that job postings never will.
Cna jobs hawaii span a wider range than most people realize. Beyond the standard hospital and nursing home roles, Hawaii has growing demand for home health CNAs who serve elderly patients in private residences, hospice CNAs who provide end-of-life care in both facilities and homes, and rehabilitation CNAs who work in physical therapy centers helping patients recover from surgeries and injuries. Each niche pays differently and demands different temperaments.
Home health work in Hawaii carries unique advantages. You set your own schedule (mostly), you work one-on-one with patients instead of managing a 15-person assignment, and the pay often matches or exceeds facility rates because agencies bill higher for private-duty care. The downside: isolation, no immediate coworker support, and transportation costs between patient homes that can eat into your earnings if you're driving across Oahu in rush hour traffic.
One final note on the job market. Hawaii's healthcare industry is consolidating. Hawaii Pacific Health (which owns Kapiolani, Pali Momi, Straub, and Wilcox) now controls a significant share of the state's hospital beds. That consolidation means fewer independent employers but more internal transfer opportunities β once you're in the system, moving between facilities or islands becomes straightforward.

So what does hawaii cna salary actually look like compared to the mainland? The raw numbers tell one story β Hawaii's median CNA wage of $18.50/hour ranks in the top 15 nationally. But purchasing power tells another. When you adjust for cost of living, Hawaii CNAs earn the equivalent of about $13 to $14 per hour in mainland purchasing power. That's below the national median. It's a bitter pill, and it's the main reason experienced CNAs either leave for the mainland or pivot to travel contracts where stipends offset the high costs.
Cna pay hawaii gets a boost from a few factors that don't show up in hourly wage data. Many facilities offer shift differentials that add $2 to $4 per hour for nights and weekends. Some employers provide housing assistance β either subsidized staff housing (rare but it exists at a few rural facilities) or monthly stipends of $300 to $500. And union membership, common at Hawaii's larger hospitals, locks in regular raises, overtime protections, and grievance procedures that prevent the worst management abuses.
The union factor deserves its own paragraph. UNAC/UHCP and UPW represent CNAs at multiple Hawaii facilities. Union contracts typically guarantee annual raises of 2 to 3 percent, overtime pay starting at 8 hours (not 40 hours/week like non-union shops), and staffing ratios that limit how many patients you're assigned per shift. Non-union facilities may pay slightly higher base rates to compete, but the total compensation package β including retirement contributions and job security β usually favors union shops.
If you're a CNA weighing Hawaii against other states, run the full calculation. Take your expected hourly rate, multiply by 2,080 hours, subtract taxes, subtract housing costs, subtract transportation and food (both significantly more expensive than the mainland), and see what's left. For some people β especially those who value the lifestyle, the weather, and the community β the financial sacrifice is worth it. For others, a 13-week travel contract lets you experience Hawaii without committing to its cost structure permanently.
