  1. What special requirements apply to electric under-floor heating in a bathroom?

Answer: The heating elements must be covered by an earthed metallic grid or the heating is used as a SELV system; a 30 mA RCD is required

Electric under-floor heating in bathrooms requires protection by a 30 mA RCD; BS 7671 recommends an earthed metallic grid over the heating element or SELV operation to provide additional protection against a fault in the heating element.

  2. Can data or communication cables (e.g., telephone) be run in bathroom zones?

Answer: Cables may pass through bathroom zones but connection points (sockets) are not permitted within Zones 0, 1 or 2 unless the equipment is specifically suitable for the zone

Cabling may pass through bathroom zones in concealed runs, but communication/telephone socket outlets are not permitted in Zones 0, 1 or 2; equipment must be outside the zones or specifically suitable for the zone conditions.

  3. What is the requirement for a ceiling pull switch in a bathroom?

Answer: The switch mechanism itself must be suitable for the zone where it is installed (minimum IPX4 in Zone 1, IPX2 in Zone 2), with the pull cord being the only user contact

The ceiling-mounted switch body must have the appropriate IP rating for its zone (minimum IPX4 for Zone 1); the pull cord itself is acceptable as the only user-accessible part as it is a non-conductive insulator.

  4. How does the zone apply in a bathroom where the ceiling height is less than 2.25 m?

Answer: Zone 1 extends to the ceiling regardless of whether the ceiling height is below 2.25 m

BS 7671 specifies that Zone 1 extends vertically from the bath/shower to 2.25 m or to the ceiling if the ceiling is lower than 2.25 m; the zone continues to the ceiling to reflect that the ceiling surface can be wet.

  5. Can a bathroom include a TV or entertainment system?

Answer: Only specially designed IP-rated bathroom TVs or entertainment systems supplied via SELV or with appropriate safety isolation may be installed, located outside Zone 0 and 1 and with a minimum IPX4 rating in Zone 2

Bathroom TVs and entertainment systems must be specifically designed for bathroom use, with appropriate IP ratings for their zone, supplied through safety isolation or SELV, and positioned outside Zone 0 and Zone 1.

  6. What documentation must be issued on completion of electrical work in a bathroom?

Answer: An Electrical Installation Certificate (for new circuits) or Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate (for additions to existing circuits), as it is notifiable work under Part P

All additions or alterations to electrical installations in bathrooms are notifiable work under Part P Building Regulations; the appropriate certificate (EIC or MEIWC) must be issued, confirming compliance with BS 7671.
