NFST Test Questions and Answers

A fire team, sometimes known as a fire team, is a compact infantry sub-subunit created to maximize the tactical doctrines of β€œbounding overwatch” and β€œfire and movement” in battle.

If you’re applying to be a firefighter, the written exam is the component of the procedure that will need the least effort on your behalf. The only aspect of the procedure you can control is exam preparation. Take the necessary time to diligently study for these exams.

A passing mark is one of 70% or higher.

NFST stands for National Firefighter Selection Test.

How the National Testing Network Administers the NFST

The National Testing Network (NTN) delivers the National Firefighter Selection Test (NFST) at authorized testing centers across the United States, with scores sent directly to participating fire departments you select. Candidates register online, pay a single fee, and can share results with multiple agencies for up to one year. NTN also offers the FireTEAM video-based exam, which many departments require alongside the NFST.

What to Expect on Test Day at National Testing Network Centers

National Testing Network proctors require a valid government-issued photo ID and ask candidates to arrive 30 minutes early for check-in. The NFST itself runs roughly 2.5 hours and contains three sections: Human Relations (video-based judgment), Mechanical Aptitude, and Reading Ability. No calculators, phones, or outside materials are permitted in the testing room.

  1. Which of the following is an effective strategy for managing time on the reading comprehension section of the NFST, according to common test-taking advice?

    • A. Reading the passage multiple times before looking at any questions.
    • B. Answering questions based on the title of the passage alone.
    • C. Spending an equal amount of time on every single question.
    • D. Briefly reading the questions first to know what information to look for in the passage.

Answer: D. Briefly reading the questions first to know what information to look for in the passage.

A widely recommended strategy for reading comprehension tests is to speed-read the questions (but not the answers) before reading the passage. This helps you identify key information to look for, making your reading more focused and efficient.

  • A student scored 78, 85, 90, and 71 on four tests. What score is needed on the fifth test to achieve a mean of 84?

    • A. 96
    • B. 84
    • C. 90
    • D. 88
  • Answer: A. 96

    Needed total = 84 Γ— 5 = 420; 420 βˆ’ (78+85+90+71) = 420 βˆ’ 324 = 96.

  • Choose the bolded word that has the wrong spelling: The RESPIRATORY system and lungs are more susceptible to harm than any other part of the body. Gases ASOCIATED to fires are PERILOUS and should not be INHALED.

    • A. respiratory
    • B. asociated
    • C. perilous
    • D. inhaled
  • Answer: B. asociated

The word 'asociated' is misspelled in the passage. The correct spelling is 'associated', which includes a second 's'. The other bolded wordsβ€”'respiratory,' 'perilous,' and 'inhaled'β€”are all spelled correctly.

  • What does an 'index contour' line look like on a topographic map compared to regular contour lines?

    • A. It is thinner and lighter than regular lines
    • B. It is a heavier, darker line labeled with its elevation
    • C. It is always colored blue to show water proximity
    • D. It is a dashed line indicating uncertain terrain
  • Answer: B. It is a heavier, darker line labeled with its elevation

Index contours are thicker, darker lines drawn at every fifth contour interval and are labeled with their elevation to make it easier to read the map.
