A medicine label says the dose is 5 ml per 10 kg of body weight. What dose should a 70 kg adult receive?
Answer: 35 ml
Dose = (5 ml / 10 kg) × 70 kg = 35 ml.
A train departs at 06:30 and arrives at 09:00, covering 195 km. What is the average speed?
Answer: 78 km/h
Travel time = 2.5 hours; speed = 195 ÷ 2.5 = 78 km/h.
A solution is made by dissolving 30 g of salt in 270 g of water. What is the ratio of salt to the total solution by mass?
Answer: 1:10
Total solution = 30 + 270 = 300 g; ratio = 30:300 = 1:10.
A car's fuel economy is 12 km per litre. If petrol costs R23 per litre, what is the fuel cost per kilometre?
Answer: R1.92 per km
Cost per km = 23 ÷ 12 ≈ R1.92 per km.
A 3-metre length of wire is cut into pieces in the ratio 1:1:3. What is the length of the longest piece?
Answer: 1.8 m
Total parts = 1+1+3 = 5; longest = (3/5) × 3 m = 1.8 m.
In a survey, the ratio of people who prefer tea to those who prefer coffee is 5:3. If 120 people prefer coffee, how many people were surveyed in total?
Answer: 320
3 parts = 120, so 1 part = 40; total = 8 parts = 8 × 40 = 320.
A car decelerates from 120 km/h to 60 km/h in 30 seconds. What is the rate of deceleration in km/h per second?
Answer: 2 km/h per second
Change in speed = 120 − 60 = 60 km/h over 30 s; rate = 60 ÷ 30 = 2 km/h per second.
