  1. A car travels 120 km on 10 litres of petrol. How many litres are needed to travel 300 km?

    Answer: 25 litres

    Rate = 10/120 = 1/12 litre per km; fuel for 300 km = 300 × (1/12) = 25 litres.

  2. Two towns are 4.5 cm apart on a map with a scale of 1:200 000. What is the actual distance in kilometres?

    Answer: 9 km

    4.5 cm × 200 000 = 900 000 cm = 9 000 m = 9 km.

  3. Almond milk and oat milk are blended in the ratio 2:3. If 240 ml of almond milk is used, how many ml of the blend is produced?

    Answer: 600 ml

    If 2 parts = 240 ml, 1 part = 120 ml; total = 5 parts = 5 × 120 = 600 ml.

  4. A factory produces 450 items in 9 hours. At the same rate, how many items will be produced in 14 hours?

    Answer: 700

    Rate = 450 ÷ 9 = 50 items/hr; production in 14 hr = 50 × 14 = 700.

  5. The ratio of boys to girls in a class is 4:5. If there are 45 girls, how many students are in the class?

    Answer: 81

    If 5 parts = 45 girls, then 1 part = 9; boys = 4 × 9 = 36; total = 36 + 45 = 81 students.

  6. Water flows out of a tank at a rate of 15 litres per minute. How many litres will flow out in 1 hour and 20 minutes?

    Answer: 1 200 litres

    1 hour 20 min = 80 minutes; volume = 15 × 80 = 1 200 litres.

  7. A recipe calls for 250 g of butter to make 40 cookies. How many grams of butter are needed to make 100 cookies?

    Answer: 625 g

    Butter per cookie = 250 ÷ 40 = 6.25 g; for 100 cookies = 6.25 × 100 = 625 g.
