  1. In a class of 40, 25 study French and 20 study Spanish. If 8 study both, how many study only French?

    Answer: 17

    Only French = 25 − 8 = 17.

  2. The weighted average of two groups, 30 people averaging 60 and 20 people averaging 80, is what?

    Answer: 68

    Total = 30×60 + 20×80 = 3400, and 3400/50 = 68.

  3. If the mean of a set equals its median and the set is {2, 5, x}, what is x when the mean is 5?

    Answer: 8

    Sum must be 15, so x = 15 − 7 = 8, and the median is also 5.

  4. How many elements are in the intersection if A = {1,2,3,4} and B = {3,4,5,6}?

    Answer: 2

The common elements are 3 and 4, giving 2 elements.

  5. A list of 6 numbers has an average of 15. If one number is removed and the average becomes 16, what was the removed number?

    Answer: 10

    Original sum 90, new sum 80, so the removed number is 90 − 80 = 10.

  6. Which measure is most affected by a single extreme outlier?

    Answer: Mean

The mean shifts toward outliers because it uses all values' magnitudes.

  7. If |A| = 12, |B| = 9, and |A ∩ B| = 4, what is |A ∪ B|?

    Answer: 17

    |A ∪ B| = 12 + 9 − 4 = 17.
