A price decreases by 20%. By what percentage must it then increase to return to the original price?
Answer: 25%
After a 20% drop to 80, restoring to 100 requires an increase of 20/80 × 100 = 25%.
Of 250 students, 30% study French, 40% study Spanish, and 10% study both. What percentage study neither language?
Answer: 40%
By inclusion-exclusion, 30% + 40% − 10% = 60% study at least one language, so 40% study neither.
A person spends 25% of income on rent and 30% on food, saving the rest. If savings total $2,700 per month, what is the monthly income?
Answer: $6,000
Savings = 100% − 25% − 30% = 45% of income; income = $2,700 ÷ 0.45 = $6,000.
A car travels from A to B at 60 mph and returns at 40 mph. What is the average speed for the round trip?
Answer: 48 mph
Average speed for equal distances = 2 × 60 × 40 / (60 + 40) = 4,800 / 100 = 48 mph.
If x% of 80 equals 8% of 100, what is x?
Answer: 10
0.80x = 8% × 100 = 8, so x = 8 / 0.80 = 10.
A piece of cloth sells for $120 at a 20% profit. What is the percentage gain or loss if it is sold for $90 instead?
Answer: 10% loss
Cost price = $120 ÷ 1.20 = $100; selling at $90 gives a loss of $10 on $100, which is a 10% loss.
A sum of money doubles itself in 8 years under simple interest. What is the annual interest rate?
Answer: 12.5%
If the principal doubles, SI = Principal; Rate = 100 / (1 × 8) = 12.5% per year.
