  1. An item sells for $90 at a 20% profit over cost. What was the cost?

    Answer: $75

    1.2c = 90, so c = 75.

  2. The sum of three consecutive even integers is 78. What is the largest?

    Answer: 28

    x + (x+2) + (x+4) = 78 gives x = 24, so the largest is 28.

  3. A pipe fills a tank in 5 hours and a drain empties it in 8 hours. With both open, how long to fill the tank?

    Answer: 13.3 hours

    1/5 − 1/8 = 3/40, so the tank fills in 40/3 ≈ 13.3 hours.

  4. If $5000 is invested at simple interest and grows to $5900 in 3 years, what is the annual interest rate?

    Answer: 6%

    Interest is $900 over 3 years on $5000, so rate = 900/(5000×3) = 6%.

  5. A class has a ratio of boys to girls of 3:5. If there are 24 boys, how many students total?

    Answer: 64

    24 boys means 8 per part, girls = 40, total = 64.

  6. John has nickels and dimes totaling $2.40 with 30 coins in all. How many dimes does he have?

    Answer: 18

    0.05(30−d) + 0.10d = 2.40 gives d = 18.

  7. A number divided by 4 gives the same result as the number minus 9. What is the number?

    Answer: 12

    x/4 = x − 9 gives 3x = 36, so x = 12.
