NC DMV written test - how many questions can you actually miss?

Taking my North Carolina DMV written test next week and I'm trying to figure out the actual margin for error. I know you need to pass with 80% but the total question count varies depending on which version you get. If it's 25 questions you can miss 5. If it's 20 questions you can only miss 4. Is there a standard version they use or is it random?

I've been using a North Carolina DMV Practice Test and my scores are coming in around 88-92% consistently. The road signs section is where I'm strongest - I've been driving for years in other states so most of them are familiar. The NC-specific rules are what trip me up occasionally, stuff like specific speed limits in school zones and the details around implied consent law.

I'm 23 and this is technically my first time getting an NC license after transferring from out of state. The DMV website says I need to take the full written test even with a valid license from another state, which seems unnecessary but okay. Anyone know if there's a minimum wait time between attempts if you fail?

Implied consent and the DWI-related questions are NC favorites on the actual test. Make sure you know the blood alcohol limits for regular drivers vs. CDL holders vs. under 21 - they're different and they'll test the distinction.

If you fail, there's a 1-day waiting period before you can retake it. You get 3 attempts before they make you wait longer. But with your practice scores you shouldn't be anywhere near that situation.

Bring everything on the checklist - a lot of out-of-state transfers get turned away at the counter because of missing documents and then have to reschedule. The DMV isn't flexible about documentation on the first visit.

NC uses 25 questions for the standard knowledge test, so you can miss 5. The sign recognition portion is usually about 10 of those. At 88-92% on practice tests you're in great shape and shouldn't be sweating this.

Honestly I almost didn't bother retaking mine after I failed the first time. I missed 6 on a 25-question version and just felt like the whole thing was rigged against me. But I went back two weeks later after actually drilling the road signs and the right-of-way stuff and I passed with only 2 wrong. The math isn't as scary as it sounds once you stop thinking about it as "how many can I miss" and start thinking about what you actually know cold.

Don't psych yourself out over which version you get. You can't control that anyway. What helped me was doing practice tests until I was consistently getting 90% or better, so even if I had a bad day I still had cushion. The NC-specific stuff like school bus laws and the open container rules tripped me up first time because I skipped those thinking they were obvious. They weren't. Study those specifically and you'll be fine.
