Failed my NC DMV test twice — what am I missing here?

So I'm officially embarrassed. I've taken the NC knowledge test twice now and failed both times. First time I got a 74% (you need 80% to pass), second time an 76% — so I'm getting closer but still can't clear the bar. I've been driving for years in another state so I figured this would be easy, but the North Carolina-specific rules are tripping me up constantly. Speed limits in school zones, right-of-way at uncontrolled intersections, that kind of stuff.

I've been using a couple random NC DMV practice test sites but honestly I'm not sure they're accurate. Some questions feel way off from what actually shows up at the DMV. Has anyone found a study guide that actually maps to the real test? I've got my third attempt scheduled for next Friday and I really can't fail again — my job literally depends on having a valid license here.

Any exam tips from people who've been through this recently would be huge. Specifically wondering if I should memorize the actual numbers (stopping distances, speed limits) or if it's more conceptual.

You're so close though — 76% on your second try means you've got the basics down. Just nail the NC-specific rules and you'll clear 80% easily. Third time's the charm, good luck Friday!

The numbers absolutely matter — don't skip them. I failed once because I guessed on stopping distances and got burned. When I came back the second time I had memorized that 55 mph requires 300+ feet to stop and I saw almost that exact question again. The DMV handbook is dry but chapter 4 on traffic laws is basically a cheat sheet. Read it twice, then do practice tests. I passed with an 88% after about 6 hours of actual focused studying.

Honestly the random free sites are hit or miss. I used one that had outdated speed limit questions and it cost me points. What helped me was finding a prep site that pulls from the actual NC Driver Handbook and flags which chapter each question comes from — that way when you miss one you know exactly where to go back and review. Also, school zone speed limits and the implied consent law for DUIs showed up multiple times on mine. Prioritize those topics.
