CMP practical exam - how strict are the judges on time and technique?

I've got my CMP practical in 6 weeks and I'm more nervous about that component than the written. I've been doing pedicures for 8 years but performing under exam conditions is completely different from working on real clients. My timing is the issue - I can do a full service in about 55 minutes normally but under pressure I add 10-15 minutes.

The written portion I'm less worried about. Scoring 88-91% on practice tests covering nail anatomy, pathology, and sanitation protocols. The mock questions on contraindications feel pretty representative of what I've heard the real exam covers.

What I can't find good information on is how much leeway evaluators give on technique versus time. If my cuticle work is technically perfect but I go 3 minutes over, does that fail me? Or is it holistic scoring? The official rubric talks about proficiency but doesn't break down exactly how time factors in.

I've been practicing on a model 3 times a week for the past month, talking through each step out loud to simulate the evaluation environment. Anyone who's been through it - was the evaluator interaction what you expected?

Passed mine last year. The cuticle work is heavily weighted so don't rush that to save time. Better to be slightly slow and technically clean than fast and rough.

Three practice sessions a week on a model is the right call. I did 5 per week the final two weeks and it made a huge difference in my automaticity. When you're not thinking about steps you naturally get faster.

The evaluator interaction was exactly what the prep materials described - no surprises for me.

Your written scores sound solid. Focus all your remaining energy on the practical. The 8-year experience base will carry you once the nerves settle down on the day.

The evaluators are strict on time in my experience - going significantly over can affect your score even with perfect technique. I'd aim to consistently finish under 50 minutes in practice so you have a buffer on exam day.

The talking-through-steps approach is smart. They watch your communication as part of client interaction scoring.
