CPCE Exam

Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam (CPCE) is a knowledge-based exam that tests a student's knowledge of counseling and professional counseling skills. It is a requirement for graduate degree programs in the field of clinical mental health counseling. The results of CPCE have been used by hundreds of universities across the nation. Approximately 160 items are included on the test, which is divided into eight areas of focus.

This examination was developed by the National Board for Certified Counselors. Each year, students are given the chance to take the exam as part of their graduate coursework. A score report will be sent to the student as soon as they complete the exam.

CPCE is administered as a computer-based exam at a testing center. Students have four hours to complete the test. If they are not satisfied with their score, they can take the exam a second time, or they can reschedule their appointment within a 24-hour window.

The best way to prepare for the test is to get a clear understanding of the content areas of the test. You can do this by reading course materials and practicing test questions.

Sample Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam Practice Questions

Try these questions from our free Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam practice tests. The correct answer and an explanation follow each question.

  1. A counselor designs a final exam for a graduate-level ethics course. The counselor meticulously ensures that the exam questions cover all major topic areas from the syllabus in proportion to the time spent on each topic during the semester. This process is primarily an effort to establish the exam's:

    • A. predictive validity
    • B. construct validity
    • C. content validity
    • D. test-retest reliability

Answer: C. content validity

Content validity refers to the extent to which a test's items adequately represent the entire domain of the content it is designed to measure. By aligning exam questions with the course syllabus and topic coverage, the counselor is ensuring the test is a representative sample of the course material.

  • A counselor is asked to use an intelligence test that was standardized in the early 1990s on a predominantly suburban, middle-class population. The counselor's current clients are from a diverse, urban setting. Ethically, the counselor's primary concern should be the test's:

    • A. outdated and potentially culturally biased norms.
    • B. low predictive validity for academic success.
    • C. prohibitively long administration time.
    • D. lack of sufficient subscale scores.
  • Answer: A. outdated and potentially culturally biased norms.

Using tests with outdated or inappropriate norms is a significant ethical concern. Norms provide the comparison group for a client's score, and if the norm group does not reflect the client's demographic (e.g., age, culture, socioeconomic status), the resulting interpretation is likely to be invalid and potentially harmful.

  • A counselor is working with a client who consistently idealizes the counselor, comparing them to a beloved and supportive parent from their childhood. The client also expresses intense disappointment when the counselor has to reschedule an appointment. This is a classic example of:

    • A. Countertransference
    • B. Transference
    • C. Congruence
    • D. Empathy
  • Answer: B. Transference

Transference is a phenomenon where a client unconsciously redirects feelings and attitudes from a person in their past onto the therapist. In this scenario, the client is projecting feelings associated with a parental figure onto the counselor. Countertransference is the therapist's emotional reaction to the client, while congruence and empathy are core therapeutic conditions.

  • A counselor finds themselves feeling unusually protective and overly sympathetic towards a client who reminds them of their own child. The counselor begins to offer advice rather than facilitating the client's own exploration. The counselor is experiencing:

    • A. Therapeutic alliance
    • B. Empathic attunement
    • C. Countertransference
    • D. Positive regard
  • Answer: C. Countertransference

Countertransference occurs when a therapist projects their own unresolved feelings, experiences, or reactions onto a client. In this case, the counselor's personal feelings, triggered by the client's resemblance to their child, are interfering with their professional objectivity and therapeutic role.
