CLT Questions and Answers

CLT Exam Study Checklist
What is the CLT Certification?
The Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) credential is the gold standard professional certification for lymphedema treatment specialists in North America. Administered by the Lymphology Association of North America (LANA), this certification validates that healthcare professionals possess the specialized knowledge and clinical skills required to effectively assess, treat, and manage patients with lymphedema and related lymphatic disorders.
Lymphedema is a chronic condition characterized by abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the interstitial spaces, most commonly affecting the extremities. It can occur as a primary condition due to congenital lymphatic system malformation, or secondarily following surgery, radiation therapy, infection, or trauma. The CLT certification ensures therapists are trained in Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), the internationally recognized standard of care that combines manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, therapeutic exercise, and skin care.
CLT Exam Requirements and Eligibility
To qualify for the CLT exam, candidates must meet several prerequisites established by LANA. First, applicants must hold an active, unrestricted license as a healthcare professional in a field that includes manual treatment within its scope of practice. Eligible professions typically include physical therapists, occupational therapists, physicians, registered nurses, and in some jurisdictions, licensed massage therapists.
Additionally, candidates must complete a minimum of 135 contact hours of lymphedema education from a LANA-approved training program. These programs cover essential competencies including lymphatic system anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology of lymphedema, patient assessment and measurement techniques, manual lymphatic drainage methods, compression bandaging and garment fitting, therapeutic exercise programming, skin and wound care, and patient self-management education. Many candidates also pursue additional clinical mentorship hours beyond the minimum requirement to strengthen their practical skills before attempting the certification exam.
Tips for Passing the CLT Exam
Successful CLT exam preparation requires a structured approach that balances theoretical knowledge with practical application. Start by reviewing the official LANA exam content outline, which details the six content domains and their approximate weighting on the test. Focus additional study time on the treatment techniques domain, which represents the largest portion of the exam at approximately 25% of questions.
Use multiple study resources including your training program materials, lymphedema textbooks such as Foeldi and Zuther, and online practice tests. Create flashcards for key anatomical structures, staging criteria, and treatment protocols. Practice applying clinical reasoning to case-based scenarios, as the exam includes situational questions that require you to select the most appropriate treatment approach based on patient presentation. Finally, form or join a study group with other CLT candidates to discuss complex topics and quiz each other on challenging material.
