What is the Civics exam?
The Civics exam is an oral test administered by a USCIS officer during your naturalization interview to test your knowledge of U.S. history and government.
Who needs to take the Civics exam?
Most applicants for U.S. naturalization must take the Civics exam, unless they qualify for an age or disability exemption.
What covers the Civics test?
The Civics test covers American government, American history (colonial and modern), and integrated civics (geography, symbols, holidays).
Is the Civics exam hard?
The Civics exam is not considered hard if you study the official question list that applies to you. Most applicants today filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025 and take the 2025 Civics Test: up to 20 questions from a list of 128, needing 12 correct. Applicants who filed earlier take the 2008 test: up to 10 questions from a list of 100, needing 6 correct.
