ASWB Practice Test
Updated for October 2026What changed for the ASWB Bachelors exam in 2026
- On August 3, 2026, ASWB launched the new Social Work Licensing Exams built on the 2026 blueprints; the Bachelors exam you take depends on your test date, not your registration date. (source)
- The 2026 ASWB Bachelors exam has 122 multiple-choice questions (110 scored plus 12 unscored pretest), delivered as two 61-question sections of two hours each with an optional 10-minute break, replacing the old 170-question (150 scored + 20 pretest) format; the total time limit is still 4 hours. (source)
- The Bachelors exam now tests three content areas instead of four: Values and Ethics 35%, Assessment and Planning 33%, and Intervention and Practice 32%; the old areas such as Human Development and Direct and Indirect Practice no longer exist as separate sections. (source)
- Passing generally requires 66 to 78 correct answers out of the 110 scored questions, depending on the exam form; there is one national passing standard used by every state and provincial board, and results are reported pass/fail. (source)
- The ASWB Bachelors exam registration fee is US$230 (Associate and Masters are also $230; Advanced Generalist and Clinical are $260), paid to ASWB through ASWBCentral. (source)
- All exams are delivered at Pearson VUE test centers; the online-proctoring pilot that began March 23, 2026 was suspended as of July 31, 2026. (source)
- If you fail, you must wait 90 days before retesting; a waiver of the waiting period may be requested if you scored within 10 correct answers of passing and your licensing board allows it. (source)
- The 2025 first-time pass rate for the Bachelors exam was 70.4% (2,741 exams administered); ASWB's official online practice test costs US$85 and mirrors the 122-question, 4-hour format. (source)

Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Bachelors Test Questions and Answers
ASWB requires a 90-day wait between attempts at the Bachelors exam, and each retake means registering again and paying the full US$230 fee. If you scored within 10 correct answers of passing, you can ask your licensing board to approve a waiver of the 90-day wait. Some boards also cap the number of attempts, so check your state's rule.
The social work license exams used to evaluate a social worker's ability to practice safely and ethically are developed and maintained by ASWB. The Bachelors exam is the entry-level category for BSW graduates; the other four categories are Associate, Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical.
In 2025, the ASWB Bachelors exam had a 70.4% first-time pass rate across 2,741 exams administered, the second-lowest of the five categories (only Advanced Generalist was lower at 65.0%).
Purchase ASWB's $85 online practice test. It is worthwhile because it uses retired exam questions in the real 122-question, 4-hour format and shows you how you would be scored. The ASWB Examination Guidebook (08/2026 edition) is a free PDF that contains the full content outline for the exam, so download it before you start studying.

The best social work test prep guides break subject matter into sections that are easy to navigate. These guides also contain sample questions, as well as strategies to use during the exam. They can be customized to suit your needs.
The ASWB Bachelors exam is designed to measure the knowledge you have gained during your BSW education. Since August 3, 2026 it is a four-hour test with 122 multiple choice questions, 110 of which are scored and 12 of which are unscored pretest items; it is delivered in two 61-question sections of two hours each. The exam is scored on a pass/fail basis, and the passing score generally falls between 66 and 78 correct answers out of the 110 scored questions, depending on the form you receive.
The 2026 Bachelors exam covers three content areas: Values and Ethics (35%), Assessment and Planning (33%), and Intervention and Practice (32%). The ASWB exams are administered on computer at Pearson VUE test centers. There are five exam categories in total: Associate, Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical. Each category covers the same three content areas, but the questions are written for the level of practice being licensed, so a Bachelors candidate is tested on generalist BSW-level practice rather than clinical diagnosis.
If you want more targeted practice, the aswb practice questions page covers the same material with additional questions and explanations.

A social worker is evaluating the effectiveness of a group intervention using a pre-test/post-test design without a control group. This design is BEST described as:
- A. A randomized controlled trial
- B. A quasi-experimental design
- C. A single-system design
- D. A qualitative phenomenological study
Answer: B. A quasi-experimental design
A pre-test/post-test design without random assignment to a control group is classified as quasi-experimental because it lacks full experimental controls.
Which type of validity assesses whether a test measures what it purports to measure based on its logical content?
- A. Predictive validity
- B. Concurrent validity
- C. Content validity
- D. Construct validity
Answer: C. Content validity

A client of a social worker lately displayed signs of dread and distraction. The social worker believes the client may be a victim of domestic abuse because of other facts the client has provided and the fact that the client frequently has bruises on her arms. The social worker ought to
- A. suggest couples therapy
- B. each out to the domestic abuse hotline
- C. encourage disclosure so that interventions can quickly be put into place
- D. make an unofficial recognition of her assumption in her notes but wait patiently for the client to disclose such information
Answer: C. encourage disclosure so that interventions can quickly be put into place
When a social worker suspects domestic abuse based on observed signs and client information, their primary ethical responsibility is to address the potential danger. Encouraging disclosure creates an opportunity for the client to share their experience, which is the crucial first step in assessing the situation, ensuring safety, and implementing appropriate interventions and support. Waiting for disclosure or making unofficial notes delays necessary action and potentially leaves the client at further risk.
Which theoretical framework focuses on the interaction between individuals and their environments across multiple system levels?
- A. Psychoanalytic theory
- B. Ecological systems theory
- C. Cognitive behavioral theory
- D. Attachment theory
Answer: B. Ecological systems theory
