  1. Mike read 1/4 of a book on Monday and 1/3 on Tuesday. What fraction of the book remains?

    Answer: 5/12

    He read 1/4 + 1/3 = 3/12 + 4/12 = 7/12, leaving 1 − 7/12 = 5/12.

  2. Five friends split a restaurant bill equally. If each pays $13.40, what is the total bill?

    Answer: $67.00

    Total = 5 × $13.40 = $67.00.

  3. A container holds 50 red, 40 blue, and 10 green marbles. What percent are blue?

    Answer: 40%

    Total marbles = 100, and 40 are blue, so blue percent = 40/100 = 40%.

  4. Tom earns $12 per hour and worked 35 regular hours plus 4 overtime hours at 1.5× pay. What are his total earnings?

    Answer: $492

    Regular pay: 35 × $12 = $420; overtime: 4 × $18 = $72; total = $492.

  5. A pool holds 6000 gallons and drains at 150 gallons per hour. After how many hours will it be 1/4 full?

    Answer: 30

    Drain 3/4 of 6000 = 4500 gallons; time = 4500 ÷ 150 = 30 hours.

  6. A sequence follows the rule: each term is 3 less than twice the previous term. If the first term is 5, what is the 4th term?

    Answer: 19

    t₁ = 5, t₂ = 2(5)−3 = 7, t₃ = 2(7)−3 = 11, t₄ = 2(11)−3 = 19.
