If x + y = 10 and x − y = 4, what is x × y?
Answer: 21
Adding the equations gives 2x = 14, so x = 7 and y = 3; then x × y = 21.
What is the 8th term of the geometric sequence 2, 6, 18, 54, …?
Answer: 4374
a₈ = 2 × 3^(8−1) = 2 × 2187 = 4374.
Evaluate (2x − 3)² when x = 4.
Answer: 25
2(4) − 3 = 5, and 5² = 25.
The sum of three consecutive integers is 75. What is the largest of the three?
Answer: 26
With integers n, n+1, n+2: 3n + 3 = 75 gives n = 24, so the largest is 26.
Simplify: 3(2x + 4) − 2(x − 1).
Answer: 4x + 14
6x + 12 − 2x + 2 = 4x + 14.
A sequence follows the rule: each term is 3 less than twice the previous term. If the first term is 5, what is the 4th term?
Answer: 19
t₁ = 5, t₂ = 2(5)−3 = 7, t₃ = 2(7)−3 = 11, t₄ = 2(11)−3 = 19.
