TOEIC Test Format: Listening & Reading vs Speaking & Writing

The TOEIC program consists of two separate assessments targeting distinct communication skills. The Listening & Reading (L&R) test is a paper-based or online multiple-choice exam with 200 questions split evenly between two sections. The Listening section (45 minutes, 100 questions) covers photographs, question-response, conversations, and short talks. The Reading section (75 minutes, 100 questions) tests incomplete sentences, text completion, and reading comprehension across single and multiple passages.

The Speaking & Writing (S&W) test is delivered online. The Speaking section (approximately 20 minutes, 11 tasks) asks test-takers to read sentences aloud, describe photographs, respond to questions, and express opinions. TOEIC Score Ranges and Who Accepts TOEIC

The L&R test is scored on a scale of 10–990 (Listening 5–495, Reading 5–495). The S&W test scores Speaking from 0–200 and Writing from 0–200. ETS maps these scores to proficiency levels aligned with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference): scores of 945–990 on L&R correspond to CEFR C1 (Advanced), while 785–940 reflect B2 (Upper-Intermediate).

TOEIC is accepted by corporations, government agencies, airlines, hospitality groups, and academic institutions worldwide. Major employers including Toyota, Samsung, Nestlé, and Air France use TOEIC benchmarks for hiring, promotion, and international assignments. Many Asian countries — particularly Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam — require TOEIC scores for university graduation or civil service roles. The test is administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service) at authorized centers globally and also available in an online proctored format.

TOEIC Score Interpretation

ETS provides a detailed proficiency scale that helps employers translate raw scores into workplace readiness. A score of 945–990 on L&R indicates a test-taker can understand virtually all forms of spoken and written English encountered in professional settings, including idiomatic language and nuanced business communications — equivalent to CEFR C1. Scores in the 785–940 range (CEFR B2) suggest the candidate can participate effectively in meetings, write clear professional emails, and comprehend complex reports with only occasional difficulty.

Mid-range scores of 550–780 (CEFR B1) reflect practical communicative ability for routine workplace tasks such as following instructions, handling customer inquiries, and understanding standard business correspondence. Scores below 550 (A1–A2) indicate foundational ability and are generally not sufficient for roles requiring frequent English interaction. For S&W scores, a Speaking score of 160–200 places a candidate at CEFR B2+, capable of clear, fluent conversation on work-related topics, while Writing scores of 160–200 indicate the ability to produce well-organized professional documents.

TOEIC Preparation Strategies

Effective TOEIC preparation combines targeted practice with authentic English exposure. For the Listening & Reading test, focus on Part 5 (incomplete sentences) and Part 7 (multiple passages) as these carry the highest question counts and reward consistent grammar and vocabulary work. Spend 30 minutes daily reading business news in English (Reuters, BBC Business) and listen to workplace-oriented English podcasts to sharpen Part 3 and Part 4 conversational comprehension.

For the Speaking & Writing test, practice opinion tasks (Questions 11 and Writing Task 8) by recording yourself and comparing against ETS scoring rubrics. Build familiarity with email format conventions since Part 7 of Writing tests professional correspondence. Timed practice is essential — the L&R reading section (75 minutes for 100 questions) rewards pace management. Use full-length official ETS practice tests in the final two weeks before your test date to simulate real conditions, identify weak sections, and build test-day confidence.
