  1. A jacket originally costs $80 and is on sale for 25% off. What is the sale price?

    Answer: $60

    25% of $80 = $20 discount; $80 − $20 = $60.

  2. If a car travels 240 miles in 4 hours, what is its average speed?

    Answer: 60 mph

    Speed = distance ÷ time = 240 ÷ 4 = 60 mph.

  3. Sara has $45. She spends $12 on lunch and $18 on a book. How much does she have left?

    Answer: $15

    $45 − $12 − $18 = $15 remaining.

  4. A recipe calls for 3 cups of flour to make 24 cookies. How many cups are needed to make 40 cookies?

    Answer: 5

    3/24 = x/40; cross-multiply: 24x = 120; x = 5 cups.

  5. A store buys a shirt for $20 and sells it for $30. What is the percent markup?

    Answer: 50%

    Markup = ($30 − $20) ÷ $20 × 100 = $10 ÷ $20 × 100 = 50%.

  6. If 6 notebooks cost $18, how much do 9 notebooks cost?

    Answer: $27

    Cost per notebook = $18 ÷ 6 = $3; 9 × $3 = $27.
