How SHSAT Scoring Works
The SHSAT is divided into two equal sections โ ELA (English Language Arts) and Math โ each containing 57 questions. Your performance on each section converts to a scaled score between 200 and 800, giving a maximum combined score of 1600.
The most important thing to understand: there is no penalty for wrong answers. Every question you answer correctly adds to your raw score. Blank answers and wrong answers both count as zero โ so always guess if unsure rather than leaving a question blank.
Start preparing now with a shsat practice test to benchmark where your score stands before diving into the calculator logic below.
ELA Section Breakdown
The ELA section has two parts:
- Revising/Editing (approximately 20 questions) โ grammar, sentence structure, paragraph organization
- Reading Comprehension (approximately 37 questions) โ fiction and nonfiction passages with multiple-choice questions
For reading comprehension preparation, the SHSAT Reading Comprehension practice test targets this exact section type.
Math Section Breakdown
The Math section covers algebra, geometry, statistics, and probability from grades 5โ8. Practice with the SHSAT Math Practice quiz, or focus on SHSAT Algebra practice test and SHSAT Geometry practice test for the highest-weight topics.
Students targeting NYC's specialized high schools should review our SHSAT cutoff scores 2026 to understand the exact composite scores required for each of the eight schools and how scores have shifted year over year.

SHSAT Cutoff Scores by School 2026
Stuyvesant High School is the most competitive NYC specialized school. Historical cutoff range: 552โ562. Roughly 3% of SHSAT test-takers receive Stuyvesant offers. Focus your hardest prep on SHSAT Algebra 2 practice and advanced math topics.
Exact 2026 cutoffs announced March/April โ these are historical planning ranges.
What Is a Good SHSAT Score?
A "good" SHSAT score depends on which school you're targeting. The score for Brooklyn Tech falls 60+ points short of Stuyvesant. Use these ranges to set your goal:
- 550+: Competitive for all 8 specialized schools including Stuyvesant
- 520โ549: Strong candidate for Bronx Science, Staten Island Tech
- 490โ519: Realistic for Brooklyn Tech, CCNY, Queens Sciences
- Below 490: LaGuardia (audition-based, no SHSAT) or continued prep to close the gap
Add 10โ15 points to your consistent practice test average to estimate your real test score โ most students perform slightly better under real test conditions after thorough prep. Use the SHSAT Algebra 3 practice to test yourself on the hardest math content the exam covers.
How to Use Practice Test Scores as Predictors
Track these metrics on every shsat practice tests session:
- Raw correct per section (ELA and Math separately)
- Weakest question types (which topic costs you the most points?)
- Time pressure (are you finishing, or running out of time?)
- Improvement trend across multiple tests

How to Improve Your SHSAT Score
- โTake a full-length practice test first โ establish your baseline before any studying
- โDrill Scrambled Paragraphs weekly โ unique to SHSAT, rewards repetition over intelligence
- โFocus math time on algebra and geometry (highest question count on the test)
- โSkip and return โ never spend more than 90 seconds on any single question
- โPractice reading comprehension under time pressure (aim: 5 passages in 45 minutes)
- โReview every wrong answer โ understand the reasoning, not just the correct choice
- โTarget 40+ correct per section as your first milestone goal
- โComplete at least 5 full-length practice tests before the real exam
- +Industry-recognized credential boosts your resume
- +Higher earning potential (10-20% salary increase on average)
- +Demonstrates commitment to professional development
- +Opens doors to advanced career opportunities
- โExam preparation requires significant time investment (4-8 weeks)
- โCertification fees can be $100-$400+
- โMay require continuing education to maintain
- โSome employers may not require certification

Texas offers a middle school math tournament every year. Students must, however, score 92 on a total of six qualifying tests in order to be considered. Ava's first five examinations scores of 88, 91, 99, 86, and 92. What score must she achieve on her sixth test in order to qualify for the competition?
- A. 86
- B. 88
- C. 96
- D. 84
- E. 95
Answer: C. 96
We can solve this problem using the concept average. That is, the average of 6 tests is 92. Let "x" be the score of 6th test (88 + 91 + 99 + 86 + 92 + x)/6 = 92 (456 + x)/6 = 92 Multiply by 6 on both sides 456 + x = 92 (6) 456 + x = 552 Subtract by 456 on both sides 456 + x - 456 = 552 - 456 x = 96 Hence option (96) is correct.
Last season, the Cougar team won 16 games. The Cougar team won 20 games this season. From last year to this year, what is the percentage increase in the number of games the Cougar team have won?
- A. 70%
- B. 125%
- C. 25%
- D. 30%
Answer: C. 25%
This response represents the correct percent increase in the number of games the Cougar team won from last year to this year. 20/16 = 125/100 125 - 100 = 25
Which word best replaces the vague word in: "The movie was good in many different ways."
- A. compelling
- B. nice
- C. okay
- D. interesting
Answer: A. compelling
"Compelling" is precise and vivid, improving the weak word "good."
A rectangular yard has a perimeter of 60 meters. If its width is double its length, what is its length?
- A. 18 meters
- B. 10 meters
- C. 24 meters
- D. 20 meters
Answer: B. 10 meters
The perimeter of a rectangle is calculated as 2(length + width). Let the length be 'L'. The problem states the width is double its length, so width = 2L. Given the perimeter is 60 meters, we set up the equation: 2(L + 2L) = 60. This simplifies to 2(3L) = 60, or 6L = 60. Dividing by 6, we find L = 10 meters.
