What is the difference between fall arrest and fall restraint systems?
Answer: Fall arrest stops a fall in progress; fall restraint prevents reaching a fall edge
Fall arrest catches a falling worker; fall restraint prevents reaching a point where a fall could occur.
What factors are in total fall clearance distance calculation?
Answer: Free fall distance, deceleration distance, harness stretch and D-ring shift, worker height, and safety factor
All these factors must be summed to ensure the worker does not contact a lower level.
When is a safety net system appropriate for fall protection?
Answer: When guardrails are impractical and fall arrest would impede work
Safety nets work when other methods are impractical or would create greater hazards.
What is the proper procedure after a shock-absorbing lanyard deploys in a fall?
Answer: Remove from service immediately and destroy or return to manufacturer
The energy-absorbing element is permanently deformed after deployment.
What are OSHA guardrail system requirements?
Answer: Top rail at 42 inches plus or minus 3 inches, withstand 200 pounds force, with mid-rail
OSHA requires 42-inch top rails withstanding 200 pounds, with mid-rails or equivalent.
