Answer: 470
Multiplying by 100 moves each digit two places to the left, so 4.7 becomes 470.
A class of 28 pupils has 75% achieving the expected standard. How many pupils is that?
Answer: 21
75% of 28 = 0.75 × 28 = 21 pupils. Alternatively, 75% is three-quarters, and three-quarters of 28 is 21.
What is the mean of the following test scores: 56, 72, 68, 84, 60?
Answer: 68
Sum = 56 + 72 + 68 + 84 + 60 = 340. Mean = 340 ÷ 5 = 68.
Convert 3/8 to a decimal.
Answer: 0.375
3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. Alternatively, 1/8 = 0.125, so 3/8 = 3 × 0.125 = 0.375.
A teacher records that 12 out of 30 pupils need additional support. What percentage is this?
Answer: 40%
12 ÷ 30 = 0.4, which is 40%. Alternatively, 12/30 simplifies to 2/5 = 40%.
What is 15% of 240?
Answer: 36
10% of 240 = 24. 5% of 240 = 12. So 15% = 24 + 12 = 36.
