What is 'circle time' and how does it support behaviour management?
Answer: A structured group activity promoting emotional literacy, turn-taking, and positive relationships that build the social skills underpinning good behaviour
Circle time develops emotional literacy, listening skills, and a sense of community — these social and emotional skills underpin self-regulation and positive behaviour throughout the school day.
What does the PACE model (Hughes) involve in behaviour support?
Answer: Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy — a therapeutic approach for pupils with attachment difficulties
The PACE model (Dan Hughes) is a therapeutic approach used with children with attachment difficulties — building safety and connection through playfulness, acceptance, curiosity, and empathy.
A Year 7 pupil is persistently defiant with one teacher but compliant with others. What should the school investigate?
Answer: Whether the relationship between teacher and pupil has broken down, or if the teacher's approach triggers the pupil's behaviour
When behaviour is teacher-specific, the relationship or teaching approach is the most likely variable — investigating this, and offering coaching or mediation, is the professional response.
What is 'scripted intervention' and when is it useful?
Answer: Using pre-planned, calm phrases to de-escalate or redirect behaviour — useful when emotions are high and improvised responses may escalate situations
Scripted phrases (e.g., 'I can see you're finding this difficult. I'll give you a moment and come back') help teachers respond calmly and consistently when they might otherwise react with frustration.
What is the legal position on physical restraint by teachers in English schools?
Answer: Teachers may use reasonable force to prevent harm to pupils or others, or to prevent damage to property — it must be proportionate and a last resort
Section 93 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 permits reasonable, proportionate force as a last resort to prevent harm — all schools must have a policy, and restraint must always be documented.
How does 'emotional coaching' (Gottman) support behaviour management?
Answer: It helps pupils name and understand their emotions, developing the self-regulation skills that underpin positive behaviour
Gottman's emotional coaching approach helps children identify, name, and process emotions — developing emotional intelligence and self-regulation, which reduce reactive and impulsive behaviour.
