  1. How many grams of dextrose are in 500 mL of D5W (5% dextrose in water)?

    Answer: 25 g

    5% = 5 g/100 mL; 5 g × (500/100) = 25 g.

  2. A patient is to receive digoxin 0.125 mg daily. The available tablets are 250 mcg. How many tablets per dose?

    Answer: 0.5 tablet

    0.125 mg = 125 mcg; 125 mcg ÷ 250 mcg/tablet = 0.5 tablet.

  3. An order reads: 'NS 150 mL/hr × 12 hours.' How many total mL will the patient receive?

    Answer: 1,800 mL

    150 mL/hr × 12 hr = 1,800 mL total.

  4. A morphine PCA is programmed at 1 mg/mL with a maximum dose of 10 mg over 4 hours. What maximum volume can be delivered in 4 hours?

    Answer: 10 mL

    10 mg ÷ 1 mg/mL = 10 mL maximum in 4 hours.

  5. If a drug has a concentration of 400 mg/250 mL and must run at 2 mg/min, what mL/hr rate should be set?

    Answer: 75 mL/hr

    Concentration = 400/250 = 1.6 mg/mL; 2 mg/min ÷ 1.6 mg/mL = 1.25 mL/min × 60 = 75 mL/hr.

  6. A patient takes warfarin 7.5 mg/day using 2.5 mg tablets. How many tablets are taken per day?

    Answer: 3 tablets

    7.5 mg ÷ 2.5 mg/tablet = 3 tablets per day.

  7. A veterinary drug is dosed at 0.1 mL/lb for a 30 lb dog. How many mL are needed?

    Answer: 3 mL

    0.1 mL/lb × 30 lb = 3 mL.
