What is a master key system?
Answer: A key hierarchy where one master key opens all locks while individual keys open only specific locks
A master key system configures locks so a master key opens all locks in a building while individual change keys only operate their own specific lock.
How does a bump key open a pin tumbler lock?
Answer: By using impact to momentarily jump pins to the shear line
A bump key is cut to maximum depth on all bittings; striking it while applying tension causes the pins to jump momentarily to the shear line, allowing the plug to rotate.
What is the function of the cam in a lock mechanism?
Answer: To transmit plug rotation to the latch or bolt mechanism
The cam is attached to the back of the plug and rotates with it to actuate the latch, bolt, or other mechanism the lock controls.
What characterizes a high-security lock?
Answer: A lock with features resistant to picking, drilling, and unauthorized key duplication
A high-security lock incorporates hardened steel inserts, anti-pick pins, tight tolerances, and patented keyways that resist picking, drilling, and unauthorized key duplication.
What is the shear line in a pin tumbler lock?
Answer: The gap between the plug and shell where driver and key pins must align to allow rotation
The shear line is the interface between the rotating plug and the stationary shell; when all driver pins are lifted exactly to this line, the plug rotates freely.
What is a warded lock?
Answer: An older lock that uses fixed obstructions the key must navigate to rotate the bolt
A warded lock uses fixed projections inside the keyhole that block incorrect keys; only a key with matching cutouts can navigate the wards and turn the lock.
