Answer: 30 mpg
Fuel efficiency = 270 miles ÷ 9 gallons = 30 mpg.
A worker earns $18.50 per hour and works 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. What is the weekly gross pay?
Answer: $740
Weekly pay = $18.50 × 8 × 5 = $18.50 × 40 = $740.
A conference room can seat 240 people. If each table seats 8 people, how many tables are needed?
Answer: 30
Tables needed = 240 ÷ 8 = 30 tables.
A box contains 480 items. If 12.5% are defective, how many items are not defective?
Answer: 420
Defective = 0.125 × 480 = 60; non-defective = 480 − 60 = 420.
A project requires 3 workers 12 days to complete. How many days would 4 workers take to complete the same project?
Answer: 9 days
Total work = 3 × 12 = 36 worker-days; with 4 workers: 36 ÷ 4 = 9 days.
Train A leaves at 9:00 AM traveling 60 mph. Train B leaves the same station at 10:00 AM traveling 80 mph in the same direction. At what time will Train B catch Train A?
Answer: 1:00 PM
At 10 AM, Train A has a 60-mile lead; closing speed = 80−60 = 20 mph; time to close = 60÷20 = 3 hours; 10 AM + 3 hours = 1:00 PM.
