  1. Who must be present during the assembly and disassembly of a crane?

Answer: A qualified and competent person who directs the operation

OSHA requires a competent and qualified person to direct crane assembly/disassembly operations. This person must understand the manufacturer's procedures and potential hazards.

  2. Before assembling a crane on-site, what must be reviewed?

Answer: The manufacturer's assembly procedures, ground conditions, weather forecast, and site-specific hazards

Pre-assembly planning includes reviewing manufacturer procedures, assessing ground conditions and slope, checking weather, identifying overhead hazards, and planning the sequence of operations.

  3. What is the most common cause of accidents during crane assembly?

Answer: Uncontrolled movement of components due to improper support, rigging, or pin placement

The most frequent assembly/disassembly accidents involve boom sections, counterweights, or other heavy components moving unexpectedly due to improper support, rigging failures, or missing/incorrect pins.

  4. When assembling boom sections, what must be verified before releasing the support crane?

Answer: That all connection pins are fully inserted, secured, and verified, and the section is stable

Every connection pin must be fully seated, locked, and visually verified before the assisting crane releases the boom section. Missing or improperly installed pins can cause catastrophic failure.

  5. What role does wind play in crane assembly operations?

Answer: Wind can destabilize partially assembled components, create sail effects on boom sections, and push suspended loads during pin-up

During assembly, partially connected components are especially vulnerable to wind. Boom sections being lifted have large sail areas, and wind can prevent precise alignment for pin connections.

  6. What ground preparation is required before assembling a crane?

Answer: The ground must be evaluated for bearing capacity, leveled if necessary, and prepared with adequate support (mats, pads) for outriggers or tracks

Ground must support the crane's maximum loads during assembly AND operation. This may require compaction testing, grading, cribbing, or mats. Failure to prepare adequately can cause sinking or collapse during assembly.
