How many words does the examiner read aloud in the MoCA memory registration task?
Answer: Five
The MoCA memory task uses a list of five words.
How many learning trials are given for the word list on the MoCA, and does the examiner stop early if the patient repeats all five words on the first try?
Answer: Two trials, and the second is given even if the first was perfect
Two learning trials are always administered, regardless of first-trial performance.
How are the immediate (learning) trials of the MoCA word list scored?
Answer: No points are awarded for the learning trials
The learning trials are not scored; only delayed recall earns points.
When the patient is told the word list will be tested later, what instruction must the examiner include before the delay begins?
Answer: That they will be asked to recall the words again at the end of the test
The examiner explicitly tells the patient they will be asked for the words later.
Approximately how long after the learning trials does the MoCA delayed recall take place?
Answer: About 5 minutes
Delayed recall occurs roughly five minutes later, after the intervening tasks.
A patient spontaneously recalls 'Face', 'Church', and 'Red' at delayed recall. With a category cue they also produce 'Velvet', and with multiple choice they identify 'Daisy'. How many memory points are awarded?
Answer: 3 points
Only words recalled without any cue count toward the score, so 3 points.
