  1. What is 'asbestosis'?

Answer: A chronic, progressive scarring of the lung tissue caused by prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibres

Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease caused by inhaling asbestos fibres over a prolonged period. The fibres cause progressive scarring (fibrosis) of the lung tissue, leading to breathlessness and reduced lung function. It typically takes 15-30 years to develop after first exposure.

  2. What are 'musculoskeletal disorders' (MSDs)?

Answer: Injuries and disorders affecting the muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, cartilage and spinal discs, often from work activities

MSDs include a wide range of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system, such as back pain, upper limb disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and herniated discs. They can be caused by manual handling, repetitive tasks, poor posture, and vibration.

  3. What is 'work-related stress'?

Answer: The adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or demands placed on them at work

The HSE defines work-related stress as the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other demands placed on them at work. It is not an illness itself, but prolonged stress can lead to anxiety, depression, and physical health problems. The HSE's Management Standards identify six key stressors.

  4. What are the HSE's six Management Standards for work-related stress?

Answer: Demands, control, support, relationships, role and change

The HSE's six Management Standards for work-related stress are: Demands (workload, work patterns), Control (how much say in how they do work), Support (from managers and colleagues), Relationships (avoiding conflict, bullying), Role (clarity, no conflict), and Change (how it's managed and communicated).

  5. What is the 'CLP Regulation'?

Answer: The Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures Regulation, implementing GHS in the UK

The CLP Regulation (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) implements the Globally Harmonised System (GHS) for classifying and labelling chemicals in the UK. It requires chemical suppliers to classify hazards, use GHS pictograms, signal words, hazard statements and precautionary statements on labels.

  6. What is 'radon' and why is it a workplace hazard?

Answer: A naturally occurring radioactive gas from the ground that can accumulate in buildings and increase lung cancer risk

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the decay of uranium in rocks and soil. It can seep into buildings through cracks and openings and accumulate to hazardous levels, particularly in certain geographical areas. Prolonged exposure increases the risk of lung cancer.
