What changed for IELTS in 2026

  • Paper-based IELTS is being phased out from mid-2026. The IELTS partners announced on 5 March 2026 that "from mid-2026, we will no longer offer IELTS as a paper-based test. All IELTS tests will be delivered on computer. Exact timelines will vary by market." Existing paper-based results stay valid for the recommended two-year period. (source)
  • New "Writing on Paper" option. In selected countries, test takers sitting IELTS on computer can choose to handwrite the Writing section on an answer sheet while Listening, Reading and Writing questions appear on screen. Task types, timing (60 minutes) and scoring are unchanged; results arrive within 5 days; the Test Report Form does not show which option was chosen. Not available for IELTS for UKVI. (source)
  • Test format (Academic and General Training): Listening about 30 minutes, 4 parts, 40 questions (plus 10 minutes to transfer answers on the paper test only); Reading 60 minutes, 3 sections, 40 questions; Writing 60 minutes, Task 1 at least 150 words (about 20 minutes) and Task 2 at least 250 words (about 40 minutes), with Task 2 counting twice as much; Speaking 11–14 minutes in 3 parts with a certified examiner. Total test time 2 hours 45 minutes. (source) (source)
  • Results timing: IELTS on computer usually within 1–2 days (80% of scores globally within 2 days), IELTS on paper within 13 days (7 days in India), IELTS Online within 6–8 days, IELTS for UKVI Life Skills within 9 days. (source)
  • One Skill Retake: retake any one of Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking once per original test, within 60 days of the original computer-delivered test at a centre that offers it; results within 3–5 days on a new Test Report Form. If you chose Writing on Paper, the Writing retake must also be on paper. (source)
  • IELTS Online (at home) is available for IELTS Academic only, for test takers aged 18+, with the Speaking test by video call with a human examiner; it is not accepted for visa or immigration purposes and institutions decide individually whether to accept it. (source)
  • Scoring and validity: each section and the overall result are reported on the 0–9 band scale in whole and half bands; the overall band is the average of the four sections rounded to the nearest half band. Results are recommended as valid for two years, though accepting organisations may allow longer. (source)
  • Fees and test dates are set by each test centre and country (IELTS is offered at more than 4,500 locations in over 160 countries); ielts.org no longer publishes a global fee table, so check the exact 2026 fee and available dates on the official booking page before registering. (source)

IELTS Test Structure and Format

Both the Academic and General Training versions of the IELTS have four sections: 1.) Listening, 2.) Speaking, 3.) Reading, and 4.) Writing. The test materials for the Reading and Writing differ in both versions, while the Listening and Speaking sections are the same.

From mid-2026 the IELTS partners are phasing out the paper-based test: all IELTS tests will be delivered on computer (timelines vary by country), with a new Writing on Paper option in selected markets for those who prefer to handwrite the Writing section. The skills tested, timings and scoring are unchanged. The total test time is 2 hours 45 minutes; Listening, Reading and Writing are taken in one sitting of about 2 hours 40 minutes with no breaks.

To provide you with a quick overview of the exam format, please refer to the chart presented below:

IELTS Test Structure and Format
SectionsDescription
Listening

The Listening section of the IELTS lasts approximately 30 minutes and has 40 questions. Test-takers listen to 4 recordings (British, Australian, New Zealand and North American accents), heard once only, each followed by 10 questions. On the paper-based test (being phased out from mid-2026) an additional 10 minutes is given to transfer answers to the answer sheet; on computer, answers are entered directly on screen.

There are 6 types of questions that examinees will encounter in the Listening section of the IELTS:

  1. Multiple-choice questions
  2. Matching questions
  3. Plan, map, diagram labeling
  4. Form, note, table, flow-chart, summary completion
  5. Sentence completion
  6. Short-answer

Note: Proper spelling and grammar are expected on the answer sheet. Any misspelled words or grammatical errors will be penalized.

Speaking

The Speaking section of the IELTS evaluates an examinee’s ability to communicate in English effectively. This section lasts 11-14 minutes in total. The test is a recorded face-to-face interview with a certified IELTS examiner (by video call for IELTS Online).

The IELTS Speaking section is broken down into 3 subsections:

  1. Introduction and Interview
  2. Individual Long Turn
  3. Discussion

The examinee will be evaluated by the test administrator in this following criteria:

  • Fluency and coherence
  • Lexical resource
  • Grammatical range and accuracy
  • Pronunciation

Note: IELTS examinees are advised to improve their time management skills, as this is vital in the Speaking section of the test.

Reading

The Reading section of the IELTS can last up to 60 minutes. This section contains 3 subcategories with a total of 40 questions. In the Academic version of the test, each subcategory consists of one long passage (about 2,150-2,750 words).

The passages are being taken from various academic books. In the General Training version, passages are shorter and the passages are pulled out from everyday life reading materials.

The Reading section is designed to allow test-takers to demonstrate their ability to comprehend texts effectively. Both versions will feature the following types of questions:

  1. Multiple-choice questions
  2. Identifying information
  3. Identifying a writer’s views/claims
  4. Matching information
  5. Matching headings
  6. Matching features
  7. Sentence completion
  8. Summary, note, table, flow-chart completion
  9. Diagram label completion
  10. Short-answer
Writing

The Writing section of the IELTS lasts 60 minutes and is made up of 2 tasks: Task 1 requires at least 150 words (about 20 minutes) and Task 2 at least 250 words (about 40 minutes). Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the Writing band score. Answers are typed on computer or, where the Writing on Paper option is offered, handwritten on an answer sheet.

Each written response is assessed based on the following criteria:
