Sample HESI (ATI) Practice Questions

Try these questions from our free HESI (ATI) practice tests. The correct answer and an explanation follow each question.

  1. Based on a passage: 'Nurse practitioners (NPs) have prescriptive authority in all 50 states, though scope of practice varies. In full-practice states, NPs can evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients independently. In restricted-practice states, NPs must maintain a collaborative agreement with a physician.' What is the main idea of this passage?

    • A. Nurse practitioners should have full practice authority everywhere
    • B. Physician collaboration improves patient outcomes
    • C. NP prescriptive authority exists nationwide but practice scope varies by state
    • D. Full-practice states have better healthcare than restricted-practice states

Answer: C. NP prescriptive authority exists nationwide but practice scope varies by state

The main idea summarizes the central point: NPs have prescriptive authority everywhere, but the scope of independent practice varies by state regulation.

  • Choose the correct pronoun: Between you and ____, the test was difficult.

    • A. I
    • B. me
    • C. myself
    • D. mine
  • Answer: B. me

After the preposition "between," the objective pronoun "me" is required.

  • After the storm, telephone poles ____________ all over the street.

    • A. were lying
    • B. were laying
    • C. lied
    • D. laid
  • Answer: A. were lying

The verb 'to lie' (meaning to recline or rest) is intransitive, meaning it does not take a direct object. Its present participle is 'lying.' The sentence describes telephone poles resting on the street. 'To lay' (meaning to place something down) is transitive and requires a direct object, while 'lied' is the past tense of 'to lie' (to tell an untruth).

  • A passage reads: 'While antibiotics have saved countless lives since their discovery, their overuse has led to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as MRSA. Public health experts warn that without significant changes in prescribing practices, we may enter a post-antibiotic era.' The tone of this passage is best described as:

    • A. Optimistic and encouraging
    • B. Cautionary and concerned
    • C. Hostile and accusatory
    • D. Neutral and indifferent
  • Answer: B. Cautionary and concerned

The passage acknowledges benefits but emphasizes risks with warning language ('warn,' 'post-antibiotic era'), creating a cautionary and concerned tone.
