  1. If 3x - 7 = 11, what is the value of x?

    Answer: 6

    Add 7 to both sides to get 3x = 18, then divide by 3 to get x = 6.

  2. Quantity A: the average of 10, 20, 30. Quantity B: the median of 5, 15, 25, 35. Which is greater?

    Answer: The two are equal

Quantity A averages to 20 and Quantity B's median is (15+25)/2 = 20, so they are equal.

  3. A circle has a radius of 5. What is its area?

    Answer: 25π

    Area = πr² = π(5²) = 25π.

  4. If the ratio of boys to girls in a class is 3:5 and there are 24 boys, how many girls are there?

    Answer: 40

    Each ratio unit equals 24/3 = 8, so girls = 5 × 8 = 40.

  5. What is 15% of 240?

    Answer: 36

    0.15 × 240 = 36.

  6. If x² = 49, which of the following could be the value of x?

    Answer: 7 or -7

Both 7 and -7 squared equal 49, so x can be either value.

  7. A shirt originally priced at $50 is discounted by 20%. What is the sale price?

    Answer: $40

    20% of 50 is 10, so the sale price is 50 - 10 = $40.
