If 6 workers can complete a project in 8 days, how many days will 4 workers need to complete the same project?
Answer: 12
Total work = 6 × 8 = 48 worker-days; 48 ÷ 4 = 12 days.
A car travels 240 miles in 4 hours. At the same rate, how far will it travel in 7 hours?
Answer: 420
Speed = 240/4 = 60 mph; distance in 7 hours = 60 × 7 = 420 miles.
On a map, 1 inch represents 50 miles. What actual distance corresponds to 3.5 inches on the map?
Answer: 175 miles
3.5 inches × 50 miles/inch = 175 miles.
If the price of 5 books is $35, what is the price of 8 books at the same rate?
Answer: $56
Unit price = $35 ÷ 5 = $7 per book; 8 × $7 = $56.
Pipe A fills a tank in 3 hours and pipe B fills it in 6 hours. With both pipes open, how long does it take to fill the tank?
Answer: 2 hours
Combined rate = 1/3 + 1/6 = 1/2 tank per hour, so the tank fills in 2 hours.
If 3/4 of a number is 15 more than 1/3 of the same number, what is the number?
Answer: 36
Setting up 3n/4 − n/3 = 15 gives 5n/12 = 15, so n = 36.
A solution is 20% acid. How many liters of pure acid must be added to 10 liters of this solution to make it 25% acid?
Answer: 2/3 liter
Setting up 2 + x = 0.25(10 + x) gives 0.75x = 0.5, so x = 2/3 liter.
