  1. A car's stopping distance is made up of which two parts?

    Answer: Thinking distance and braking distance

    Stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance.

  2. A 1200 kg car is travelling at 15 m/s. What is its momentum?

    Answer: 18 000 kg m/s

    Momentum = mass × velocity = 1200 × 15 = 18 000 kg m/s.

  3. According to Newton's first law, what happens to a moving object if the resultant force on it is zero?

    Answer: It continues to move at the same speed in the same direction

    With zero resultant force, a moving object keeps a constant velocity.

  4. A spring extends by 0.2 m when a force of 8 N is applied. What is the spring constant?

    Answer: 40 N/m

    F = ke, so k = F ÷ e = 8 ÷ 0.2 = 40 N/m.

  5. What does the area under a velocity-time graph represent?

    Answer: Distance travelled

    The area under a velocity-time graph equals the distance (displacement) travelled.

  6. A skydiver reaches terminal velocity. Which statement is correct?

    Answer: Air resistance is equal to the skydiver's weight, so the resultant force is zero

    At terminal velocity the forces balance, so there is no acceleration.
