  1. A warehouse has 1,440 boxes to be loaded onto trucks. Each truck holds 96 boxes. How many trucks are needed to move all the boxes?

    Answer: 15

    1,440 ÷ 96 = 15 trucks.

  2. A store buys a jacket for $75 and marks it up 40%. What is the selling price?

    Answer: $105

    $75 × 1.40 = $105.

  3. Two workers together can complete a job in 6 hours. One worker alone takes 10 hours. How many hours does the other worker need to do the job alone?

    Answer: 15

    Combined rate = 1/6; one worker's rate = 1/10; other = 1/6 − 1/10 = 1/15, so 15 hours.

  4. A car travels 240 miles on 8 gallons of gas. At the same rate, how many miles can it travel on 11 gallons?

    Answer: 330

    Fuel efficiency = 240 ÷ 8 = 30 mpg; 30 × 11 = 330 miles.

  5. In a class of 30 students, the average test score was 74. The top 5 students averaged 92. What was the average of the remaining 25 students?

    Answer: 70.4

    Total points = 30 × 74 = 2,220; top 5 total = 460; remaining 25 average = (2,220 − 460) ÷ 25 = 70.4.

  6. A recipe calls for 2¼ cups of flour to make 12 cookies. How much flour is needed for 20 cookies?

    Answer: 3¾ cups

    2.25 ÷ 12 × 20 = 3.75 = 3¾ cups.

  7. A swimming pool holds 45,000 gallons. A pump fills it at 500 gallons per hour. How long will it take to fill the pool?

    Answer: 3 days 18 hours

    45,000 ÷ 500 = 90 hours = 3 days and 18 hours.
