  1. A shirt originally priced at $80 is discounted by 25%, and then a further 10% is taken off the reduced price. What is the final price?

    Answer: $54

    $80 × 0.75 = $60, then $60 × 0.90 = $54.

  2. If 3x − 7 = 2x + 5, what is the value of x?

    Answer: 12

    Subtract 2x from both sides and add 7: x = 12.

  3. The average of five numbers is 18. If one of the numbers is removed, the average of the remaining four is 16. What number was removed?

    Answer: 26

    Total was 90; remaining total is 64; the removed number is 90 − 64 = 26.

  4. A train travels 240 km in 3 hours and then 180 km in 2 hours. What is its average speed for the whole journey?

    Answer: 84 km/h

    Total distance 420 km over total time 5 hours gives 84 km/h.

  5. What is the next number in the sequence 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, ...?

    Answer: 42

    Differences increase by 2 each time (4, 6, 8, 10), so the next difference is 12: 30 + 12 = 42.

  6. A rectangle has a perimeter of 36 cm and its length is twice its width. What is its area?

    Answer: 72 cm²
