I work full time (40 hours a week) and just registered for the MPJE. I'm trying to set a realistic study timeline before committing to a test date.
From what I've read, estimates range from 4 weeks to 16 weeks depending on background. My background is related but I've never taken a formal mpje course, so I'm probably starting at an intermediate level.
I've been using the MPJE practice test to gauge where I stand, and my initial diagnostic scores are around 60%. Also reading through mpje to fill in the theory gaps.
For those who've been through it: did you study daily or more intensively in bursts? Did your practice scores accurately predict your real exam performance?
Good thread. One thing I'd add: don't try to cram the night before. I did 4 hours the night before my MPJE and I think it hurt more than helped. Your brain needs consolidation time. Light review or full rest is better.
This is exactly the thread I needed. I sit for my MPJE in 4 weeks and have been second-guessing my prep. The mpje area you mentioned is definitely my weak spot. Thanks for the honest breakdown.
Same experience here. The MPJE practice test was what finally made it click for me — specifically the way it explains the reasoning rather than just giving answers. Took me 2 weeks of consistent practice but scores went from 65% to 83% by exam day.
Honestly, I almost talked myself out of it after week three. I'd been studying for about six weeks at that point, working full time like you, and I felt like nothing was sticking. The federal law stuff made sense but state law felt endless and I was seriously considering pushing my date back. I didn't, and I passed, so I'm glad I stuck with it, but I won't pretend it was a smooth ride.
For what it's worth, six to eight weeks was enough for me, but I had to be really honest about what "studying" actually meant. Two hours of half-distracted reading before bed didn't count. The weeks where I actually sat down for focused sessions, even just 45 minutes, were the ones that moved the needle. Don't stress too much about the total number of weeks, just make sure the hours are real ones.
