Studying for the NYS Court Officer exam - what's the realistic score target?
I've been working in security for 4 years and decided to apply for a NYS Court Officer position. I submitted my application and I'm now trying to figure out how to prepare for the written exam. From what I've read it covers reading comprehension, math, memory/observation, and clerical sections. Anyone who's gone through this recently have a sense of how competitive the scores are?
I've been doing about 45 minutes of practice per day for the past 2 weeks. Reading comprehension is my strong suit at around 88-90% consistently. The memory and observation portion is where I struggle - you're shown an image or paragraph for 5 minutes and then asked questions from memory. I'm only pulling about 65% on those and that worries me given how much weight they seem to carry.
I've heard list scores for NYC positions are extremely competitive - like you need to be in the top 10% to realistically get called. Candidates scoring 95+ with veterans' points and 90+ without seems incredibly high. Planning to give myself 8 weeks total before the exam date.
The math is mostly basic arithmetic and reading tables. Focus your time on memory and you'll be better off overall.
The memory section is 100% trainable. I was at 60% when I started and got up to 85% by exam day by practicing daily with photo observation exercises. Give yourself at least 6 weeks of consistent work on it.
For memory practice I used random news photos - studied them for exactly 5 minutes then answered my own questions. My accuracy jumped from 62% to 81% in about 4 weeks.
Scores are super competitive for NYC lists. I scored an 88 without vets points and I was well over 2,000 names down on the list. If you can get to 95+ you're in a much better position.

I'm planning to sit the real exam in about six weeks. From what I've read, you want to be consistently hitting 80+ on practice tests before you go in, so I've got a little more work to do. Good luck to everyone else prepping, it's definitely doable if you stay consistent.

As for score targets, most people I talked to on the forums said aim for 85+ if you want a realistic shot at getting called. The math wasn't bad at all, it's basic stuff, and the reading comprehension is straightforward if you don't rush it. Don't sleep on the clerical section though, it's tedious and you can lose points fast if you're not careful.
