What's the actual passing score for AFQT? Getting conflicting info
Been searching for the AFQT passing score and I keep seeing different numbers. Some say 70%, others say 75%, and the official website isn't super clear.
I've been working through "afqt score" searches online and the passing requirement seems to vary by state or version? Or am I overthinking this?
My practice test scores are hovering around 70%. Should I be aiming higher before I schedule my actual exam?
Also I noticed on afqt score — are the practice questions usually harder or easier than the real thing? Trying to calibrate how ready I actually am.
Any recent test takers who can share what the real cutoff is?
Went through this exact question when I was prepping. The AFQT material on "afqt" is actually not as bad as it looks — once it clicks it clicks.
What helped me was finding one resource that explained it from first principles instead of just giving me the "right answer." Made a huge difference on the scenario-based questions.
Also: don't underestimate the importance of reviewing your wrong answers more than your right ones. I learned more from 20 wrong answers than 200 correct ones.
Appreciate everyone sharing their experience here. I'm 3 weeks out from my AFQT exam date and feeling more confident after reading this. The consensus on afqt being the hardest section matches what I'm seeing in my practice scores — going to put extra time there this week.
For anyone finding this later: AFQT is passable with consistent effort even working full time. I studied 62 minutes a day for 8 weeks. The afqt kept me honest about my actual gaps.
Quick update: just cleared 91% on my most recent AFQT practice set using afqt. Sitting for the real thing in 2 weeks. Feeling cautiously optimistic.
You're not overthinking it but you're also kind of overthinking it. The passing score depends on which branch you're trying to join, not your state. Army is 31, Air Force is 36, Navy is 35, Marines is 32. That's it. The 70% or 75% stuff you're seeing is probably people confusing percentile scores with percentage correct, which tripped me up too when I first started studying. If you want a solid breakdown of how the scoring actually works, the afqt page explains the percentile system way better than most sites I found.
Anyway for my own update, I just hit a 58 on a practice test yesterday which I'm pretty happy about since I was scoring in the low 40s three weeks ago. I've been drilling arithmetic reasoning and word knowledge the most since those were killing me. Planning to sit the real ASVAB in about six weeks so fingers crossed it holds up.
Quick update since I was in the same boat a few weeks ago — the passing score isn't one fixed number, it depends on which branch you're joining. Army takes a 31, Navy wants 35, Air Force requires 36, and Marines need 32. So if you're seeing 70% or 75% floating around online, that's probably people confusing AFQT percentile scores with like, a percentage of questions right. They're not the same thing.
Anyway I just hit a 58 on my last practice test which I'm pretty happy with since I was getting low 40s a month ago. Planning to sit the real ASVAB in about three weeks. The math sections killed me at first but honestly drilling arithmetic reasoning every day made a huge difference. You've got more room than you think, don't stress the conflicting info too much.
