Anyone else studying for VTS in the next month? Want to study together

Taking my (VTS) Vessel Traffic Services Operator Exam exam in 7 weeks and trying to find people at a similar stage to keep each other accountable.

I study better when I have someone to compare notes with. Currently going through "VTS" and working on my weak areas — specifically around VTS exam.

My schedule: 90 min of focused study every weekday, full practice test on weekends. I review every wrong answer and try to understand the why, not just memorize the right option.

If you're in a similar prep window and want to:
- Compare practice test scores weekly
- Share resources that actually helped
- Talk through confusing questions

Reply here or message me. Doesn't have to be formal — even just checking in once a week helps me stay on track.

Where is everyone at in their prep?

The free vts vessel traffic management navigation helped me understand what the exam actually tests rather than just what the material covers.

I actually failed the first time by a few points. Total gut punch. But passed on the second attempt with a comfortable margin.

What changed: I stopped trying to memorize answers and started actually understanding the material. Specifically on VTS exam — I went back to basics and worked forward from first principles.

Also switched from reading to doing. Less time with the textbook, more time on practice questions with detailed answer explanations.

You've got this. The second attempt is always better because you know exactly what the exam is like.

The honest answer is: it depends a lot on your background.

If you're already working in this field, the VTS exam is testing knowledge you probably use daily. The "VTS" sections will feel familiar.

If you're coming in from outside, give yourself an extra 2 weeks and really focus on the practical application questions.

The practice tests here are worth doing repeatedly — I did the same test bank multiple times and found new questions I'd missed each time.

For anyone finding this later: VTS is passable with consistent effort even working full time. I studied 55 minutes a day for 8 weeks. The free vts safety emergency response operations kept me honest about my actual gaps.

Coming back to this thread — just passed my VTS yesterday. Everything about the vts practice test section is accurate. For anyone still studying, the free vts safety emergency response operations was the closest thing to the real exam I found.

I failed my first attempt last spring and honestly it was a wake-up call. I was going through the material too fast and thought I could just memorize the rules without really understanding how they apply in actual traffic scenarios. Big mistake. The second time I slowed down a lot, spent more time on the situational stuff, and started quizzing myself instead of just re-reading notes. That made a huge difference.

If you want to study together I'm definitely in. I've got about five weeks left and I'm still shaky on some of the communication protocols so it'd be good to have someone to talk through scenarios with. Having a study partner kept me honest last time, even just knowing someone else was going to ask me questions made me actually prepare instead of skimming.

I failed my first attempt and honestly it wasn't even close. My mistake was spending too much time on the broad stuff and not drilling the specific operational procedures they actually test on. Second time around I focused hard on vts navigation systems because that section wrecked me the first go and I'd been glossing over it.

What actually helped was timed practice under pressure. I'd do a set of questions with a timer running and review every wrong answer before moving on. It's tedious but you start seeing the patterns they love to repeat. Good luck to you — seven weeks is enough time if you're consistent about it.
