Arizona UBE — transferred my score from another state, here's what I learned
Passed the UBE in Colorado two years ago with a 272. Just transferred my score to Arizona since I moved for a job. The process was simpler than I expected but there were a few things I wish I had known in advance, specifically about the Arizona MPRE requirement and the character and fitness process for transferred scores.
Going through the free az bar scoring questions and answers material to understand the Arizona-specific requirements. Arizona requires a minimum UBE score of 270 for score transfers, so my 272 qualified, but barely — anyone transferring should verify their score meets the minimum before paying application fees.
The main surprise was that Arizona's character and fitness review for score transfers was more involved than I expected. They want full disclosure going back further than some states require, and the process took about four months from application to approval.
The 270 minimum for Arizona UBE transfer is worth emphasizing — I've seen people assume the national UBE portability means any passing score (266 in some states) transfers everywhere. Arizona's floor is above the UBE passing standard in lower-minimum states.
Four months for character and fitness on a transfer is normal for Arizona. They're thorough. If you have anything at all on your record — even resolved matters — disclose fully. AZ Bar Counsel is less concerned about old issues than about incomplete disclosure.
Did you need to do any Arizona-specific coursework or just the score transfer? I'm considering a move from Texas and I'm trying to understand if score transfer or taking the Arizona bar fresh is the better path.
For anyone reading: also check the MPRE requirement for Arizona specifically — they require a 75 minimum (same as most states) but some states have lower minimums and your existing MPRE score might need a retake. Verify before you assume it transfers clean.
Thanks for this -- I'm actually going through the opposite situation, studying from scratch for the Arizona exam rather than transferring. Just wanted to share a quick update since this thread's been helpful: I took a az bar constitutional law practice test last night and scored a 71, which feels okay but I know I need to push that closer to 80 before I'm comfortable. Con law has always been my weak spot.
I'm planning to sit the February exam. Still have a few months so it's not panic mode yet, but I've been trying to do at least one practice section every day to keep the momentum going. Did you find the character and fitness piece took a long time? That part is honestly stressing me out more than the actual exam right now.
