Is MCTS certification worth it for career growth? Honest take

I've been going back and forth on whether to pursue MCTS certification and wanted to get honest input from people who've actually done it.

On paper, having exam prep credentials on your resume looks great. But I'm wondering whether employers actually differentiate between certified and non-certified candidates in practice, or whether it just checks a box.

My current role doesn't require the MCTS but a senior position I'm targeting lists it as preferred. I've been using the mcts - microsoft certified technology specialist sql server 2008 administration questions and answers to study and mcts test for the broader context — the content is solid, but I want to make sure the certification itself carries weight before investing another 10 weeks.

For anyone who got the MCTS cert: did it open doors you wouldn't have otherwise had? Any salary bump or was it more of a formality for a promotion you were already on track for?

For the people asking about study timelines: I studied 79 minutes per day for 14 weeks working full time. It's absolutely doable without burning out. The key is consistency — missing days hurts more than extending your timeline.

For what it's worth — I've taken the MCTS twice now. First attempt I underestimated the study guide questions. Second time I focused almost exclusively on applied practice and passed comfortably. The difference is real.

Really helpful breakdown, thanks for sharing. I'm at week 3 of my MCTS prep and the study guide section is exactly where I'm struggling too. Going to try the approach you described and see if it moves my scores.

Good thread. One thing I'd add: don't try to cram the night before. I did 3 hours the night before my MCTS and I think it hurt more than helped. Your brain needs consolidation time. Light review or full rest is better.
