Failed IPTPA exam twice — what finally worked for my third attempt

So I've been trying to get my IPTPA certification for almost a year now. First attempt I scored a 68, needed a 75. Second time I got a 72 and honestly thought about giving up. The problem wasn't that I didn't know pickleball — I've been playing for four years and coaching a local rec league. The issue was I had no idea how the exam was actually structured or what they were really testing.

What turned things around was finally finding a decent IPTPA practice test that matched the actual question format. I'd been reading the manual front to back but the wording on the real exam is weirdly specific, especially around biomechanics and teaching methodology. I also picked up a study guide that broke down the pedagogical sections, which I'd basically been ignoring. Spent about 3 weeks, maybe 90 minutes a day.

Passed with an 81 on my third try. Happy to share what resources I used and some exam tips if anyone's prepping right now. It's very passable once you know what to focus on.

This is really helpful, thank you. I'm scheduled for my first attempt in six weeks and the biomechanics section is exactly where I'm worried. I played tennis for 15 years so the movement stuff makes sense to me physically but explaining it in IPTPA terminology is a different thing entirely. Which sections did you weight most of your study time toward? And was the practice test you found pretty close to the real difficulty level?

Congrats on passing! I got mine last fall and totally agree about the teaching methodology piece — that caught me off guard too. My exam tip for anyone reading: don't just memorize the stages of learning, actually think through examples for each one. They'll give you a scenario and you need to apply the framework, not just recite it. I'd say at least 40% of my exam was scenario-based questions.

The third time really is the charm for this one. I know three coaches who needed multiple attempts. Don't get discouraged — the passing rate on first attempt is apparently pretty low. Use every practice test you can find and you'll get there.
