Which section of the CRST is hardest? My breakdown after taking it

Just finished the CRST and wanted to give a detailed breakdown of the difficulty by section for people currently studying.

The study guide questions were the most challenging by far — not because they're tricky, but because they require you to apply concepts rather than just recall them. I studied that section twice as hard after my practice scores showed a consistent gap there.

The easier wins are in the foundational areas where memorization pays off. I recommend starting with the crst refrigeration systems & components to get a feel for question style — the format really does match what you'll see on test day.

My advice: don't neglect the applied sections even if the theory feels comfortable. The exam is designed to catch people who understand concepts in isolation but struggle with real-world scenarios. Practice those especially.

This is exactly the thread I needed. I sit for my CRST in 4 weeks and have been second-guessing my prep. The practice test area you mentioned is definitely my weak spot. Thanks for the honest breakdown.

Good thread. One thing I'd add: don't try to cram the night before. I did 3 hours the night before my CRST and I think it hurt more than helped. Your brain needs consolidation time. Light review or full rest is better.

Congrats on passing! Can I ask — how many questions did the actual exam have compared to what the practice tests simulate? I've seen different numbers online and want to calibrate my timing during practice.

Congrats on finishing! For me the safety procedures and environmental regulations section was the one that almost got me. I've always been decent at memorizing rules but that section actually tests whether you understand the *why* behind them, which is a totally different thing. What finally helped was drilling with free crst safety procedures environmental regulations questions until the reasoning clicked, not just the answers.

Honestly the biggest shift for me was stopping trying to memorize and starting to think through scenarios. Once you can picture the actual situation the question is describing, the right answer usually makes sense without even second-guessing it. Took me a few failed practice rounds to figure that out but once it clicked everything felt way more manageable.

I'm actually in the middle of studying for this right now, so your breakdown is super helpful. I just scored a 78% on a practice set last night, which I'm feeling okay about but wasn't quite where I wanted to be. The safety and environmental stuff tripped me up the most, so I've been drilling with free crst safety procedures environmental regulations questions to get more reps in before test day.

I'm planning to sit the real exam in about three weeks. Hoping to hit consistently above 80% on practice before I book it. Did you find the pacing on the actual exam felt rushed, or did you have enough time to go back and review?
