How many weeks do you actually need to prepare for the FBI Special Agent exam?

I applied for an FBI Special Agent position back in January and just got notified that I passed the initial screening — now I'm staring down the Phase I written test and honestly feeling a bit lost on where to start. I've been in law enforcement for six years so I'm not coming in completely cold, but the cognitive ability sections have me nervous. A friend who went through this two years ago said the logical reasoning portion was way harder than she expected.

I've been working through an FBI practice test I found online but I can't tell if it's actually representative of the real thing. I've also downloaded a couple of study guide PDFs but they feel pretty generic. Has anyone here actually sat for Phase I recently? Trying to figure out if six weeks of prep is realistic or if I need to push harder from day one.

Specifically curious about the situational judgment section — do those scenarios lean heavily on FBI core values, or is it more general ethics/decision-making? Any exam tips from people who've been through it would be seriously appreciated.

Six weeks is doable but you have to be consistent. I did eight weeks, about 90 minutes a day, and felt comfortable going in. The situational judgment questions definitely reflect FBI values — integrity, respect, that kind of thing — but they're framed as real workplace dilemmas, not obvious gotcha questions. Don't overthink them. The cognitive ability section was trickier for me personally. Pattern recognition and series completion. Do timed practice because the pace matters a lot.

Congrats on making it through screening, that's already a big deal. I'll be honest, I failed Phase I my first attempt mostly because I underestimated the writing portion. There's a written exercise where they assess how clearly you communicate under time pressure. Nobody really warns you about that part. Second time around I focused my prep there and passed. Whatever study guide you're using, make sure it covers the written component, not just the logic puzzles.

The practice tests online vary wildly in quality — some are way too easy compared to the real thing. Try to find ones that are timed and cover all four sections. Also get good sleep the week before. Sounds basic but I've talked to a few people who crammed the night before and totally blanked on stuff they knew cold.
