CSCS card test – how long does it actually take to book and receive the card?

I'm starting a new job on a construction site in about 4 weeks and my employer says I need a valid CSCS card before my first day. I've registered for the Health, Safety and Environment test but the earliest available slot at my local test center is 3 weeks away. That leaves almost no buffer if anything goes wrong with the application afterward.

I've been studying the revision book for about 2 weeks, roughly 45 minutes per day. I'm getting around 85% on the practice questions I've been doing online, which I think is reasonably solid. The test itself is 50 questions, 45 to pass – though I'm not certain that's the current passing threshold.

My bigger concern is the timeline after passing. How long does the actual CSCS card take to arrive once you've passed the test and submitted the application? My employer said they might accept a digital confirmation but I'm not sure if CSCS provides that.

I'm applying for the Green Labourer card. Is the application process straightforward or are there common mistakes that cause delays?

You can book tests at multiple centers if you search a bit outside your immediate area – I found a slot 8 days sooner by trying two towns over. Worth checking if timing is tight.

Green Labourer application is fairly straightforward – you just need your test pass certificate number and to pay the card fee online. The most common delay I've seen is people entering their NI number wrong or using a name that doesn't exactly match their ID. Double-check everything before you submit.

Physical card took about 10 working days to arrive after the application was submitted. The online portal does give you an "application accepted" confirmation immediately and some employers will accept that as interim proof. Worth asking your site manager directly.

The HSE test is 50 questions, 45 correct to pass as of the current version – double-check that figure on the CITB site because it changed relatively recently. Your 85% practice score should be enough but don't ease off in the last week.

Just went through this exact situation a couple months ago so hopefully this helps. The booking itself is pretty quick, it's the waiting for a slot that kills you. What actually made the difference for me was doing the revision app every day for about 20 minutes rather than cramming the night before. I kept failing the practice tests on first aid questions specifically, so I just hammered those until they stuck.

Once you pass, the card usually arrives within 5 working days which isn't bad. So if your test is 3 weeks away you've still got a bit of wiggle room. Don't stress too much about the test itself, it's not as hard as people make out, but don't go in blind either. The official revision materials are worth using over random YouTube stuff.
