Got my results yesterday and didn't pass. I'm frustrated but trying to stay focused on what to fix rather than dwelling on it. Writing this partly to process it and partly because I know others will be in the same spot.
My weakest area was practice test — I knew going in that it was shaky but underestimated how much the exam weighted it. The questions weren't unfair, I just didn't have the depth I needed.
I'm rebuilding my study plan around the mnt medical nail care techniques and going much slower this time — no more rushing through topics I think I know. Planning to take 5 more weeks before rescheduling.
Anyone else been through a MNT retake? What specifically changed in your approach that made the difference? And is it normal to feel like the second attempt is actually harder because of the pressure?
Late to this thread but wanted to add — the exam prep section trips up more people than any other part. If you're scoring below 70% there in practice, treat it as your only focus for at least a week before moving on. Breadth at the expense of depth in that area is a common mistake.
This is exactly the thread I needed. I sit for my MNT in 5 weeks and have been second-guessing my prep. The practice test area you mentioned is definitely my weak spot. Thanks for the honest breakdown.
This is exactly the thread I needed. I sit for my MNT in 2 weeks and have been second-guessing my prep. The practice test area you mentioned is definitely my weak spot. Thanks for the honest breakdown.
Failed first attempt, came back to this thread. The consensus on mnt practice test being the make-or-break area is right. Focusing almost exclusively on applied questions this time around.
Quick update for anyone following this thread: I retook a full practice test last night and scored a 78, which honestly surprised me. Wasn't expecting to move the needle that fast. I've been doing focused review every day for the past two weeks, mostly drilling the areas I bombed last time instead of just reading through everything again.
I'm planning to sit the real exam in about six weeks. Feels like enough time to keep building without losing momentum. If you're in the same boat, just keep going — the practice scores do start moving if you're consistent.
I failed my first attempt too, and honestly the biggest thing I changed was how I practiced. I'd been doing long study sessions and then checking practice questions at the end, which meant I wasn't really testing myself — I was just confirming what I already knew. Second time around I flipped it: practice questions first, then go back and study whatever I bombed. It felt uncomfortable but that discomfort is the whole point.
The other thing is don't skip the stuff you think you know. I assumed I had certain areas covered and barely touched them, and of course those showed up. You've already done this once so you know where your gaps are — just don't let the stuff that feels solid fool you into ignoring it. It's worth at least one quick pass on everything before test day.
