CBEST math section — failed by 3 points, planning my retake strategy
Just got my CBEST results back and passed reading (73) and writing (60), but math got me — ended up with a 38 and needed a 41. I'm a secondary English teacher applying in California so math has never been my strong suit. The arithmetic and statistics questions weren't terrible, but I ran out of time and rushed the last 12 questions.
I'm planning a 6-week retake timeline. My two main problems are slow mental math and weak geometry. I spent way too long on a few percentage and ratio problems and that ate into my time budget. 38 to a passing score is very doable in 6 weeks. The geometry on CBEST is really just perimeter, area, and basic coordinate stuff. Once you've drilled those a few times they stop taking as long. Timed practice is the key — the content isn't really the issue at this level.
