AEP certification — is the experience requirement flexible?

I've got 3 years of environmental consulting experience — site assessments, Phase I and Phase II work, some NEPA review support. I'm looking at the AEP certification and trying to understand whether my background qualifies me or if I'm short on the experience threshold.

The NAEEP requirements mention environmental work experience but I've seen different interpretations of what counts. My work is solidly environmental but it's project-based consulting rather than regulatory or agency work, and I want to make sure that qualifies before I start preparing.

The exam itself covers natural resources, ecology, environmental law, pollution, and land use — a lot of which I touch in my consulting work. The ecology depth is probably my weakest area since I'm more on the regulatory and assessment side.

Anyone who went through the NAEEP approval process recently — how strictly do they interpret the experience requirements? And how hard is the ecology content for someone without a natural resources background?

I came from a similar consulting background with 3.5 years and was approved. The key is documenting your experience clearly — phase of work, your specific role, the environmental components involved. Vague descriptions get flagged; specific ones get approved.

Phase I/II work absolutely counts — that's core environmental professional experience. Consulting is fine; they're not looking for agency-only backgrounds. Contact NAEEP directly if you're unsure; they're responsive and will tell you exactly what qualifies.

The ecology section is testable but not impossibly deep for a non-ecologist. Know basic ecosystem concepts, wetland types, endangered species process under ESA, and how ecology intersects with site assessment decisions. Supplement with an introductory ecology text if needed.

Coming back to this thread — just passed my AEP yesterday. Everything about the aep practice test section is accurate. For anyone still studying, the free aep environmental assessment remediation was the closest thing to the real exam I found.

Great discussion. One thing nobody mentions: sleep the night before matters more than one more study session. Went in fully rested for my AEP and felt sharper than expected.
